Efforts Intensify To Find Missing Students After Tragic Accident

Community rallies as search teams comb Chu River for two sixth graders lost during outing

A group of sixth-grade students from Xuân Tín commune, located in Thọ Xuân district of Thanh Hóa province, is at the center of urgent search efforts following a tragic incident on February 27. Two students went missing after falling off the Chu River, sparking immediate action from local authorities and the community.

According to the official report from Nguyễn Văn Đàn, the Chairman of Xuân Tín’s People’s Committee, the incident occurred around 2:30 PM. A group of 5 to 6 students had ventured to the riverbank during their break, where one of the boys decided to take a swim. Tragically, he lost his footing and fell, prompting another student to jump in to rescue him. The duo, unfortunately, found themselves caught in the river’s strong current and went under.

"We received notification of the incident shortly after it happened, and we mobilized all available resources to conduct the search and rescue operation," Đàn reported to Dân Việt. The swift response included police and local residents forming teams to scour the area.

Details from the scene indicate the river’s depth and current were significant factors complicate the search. Eyewitnesses described the moments immediately following the boys' descent and noted the panic as the rest of the group summoned adults for help. Despite their calls, initial attempts to locate the missing students yielded no results.

Local authorities have intensified search efforts since the late afternoon, involving hundreds of residents alongside law enforcement. Teams are combing the riverbanks downstream, hoping to find clues or the boys themselves.

Images circulated by various news outlets show the area where the accident occurred, with volunteers assisting search teams as they work tirelessly against the clock. A poignant photo shared by Sài Gòn Giải Phóng depicts the community's determination, with many locals coming together to support the rescue operations.

"It’s heartbreaking to see such young lives at risk. The entire community is on high alert, and we will do everything possible to help find these children," said one local resident. Pools of concern regard the distress it's causing the families involved, with many insisting on remaining hopeful.

The search continues as darkness begins to fall, complicate the already difficult recovery efforts. Authorities have kept the families informed throughout the day and urged anyone with information to come forward.

A flurry of emotions surrounds the search site. Friends and family members of the missing students have gathered, emphasizing the anxiety only compounding as hours pass without news. Their distress echoes through the riverbanks, where hopes of finding the boys alive remain unwavering.

The community’s collective courage is on display as neighbors band together, hoping their unity brings strength during this challenging time. Local officials have established coordination protocols to effectively manage the search.

While the outcomes remain uncertain, the spirit of cooperation shines brightly, reinforcing community ties amid the turmoil. Authorities remind everyone to remain vigilant and to support one another as they wait for news.

The Xuân Tín commune has experienced similar incidents before, and this tragedy serves as a grave reminder of the dangers associated with playing near water. Officials are expected to initiate discussions on safety measures to prevent such laborious searches from being necessary again.

While the night settles, the search operation remains active, highlighting the importance of safety education for children and the need for community awareness about the potential hazards of natural water bodies.

Participants will return at first light to resume the search, determined as ever to bring any semblance of closure to the families waiting on the banks of the Chu River.
