Colorado Avalanche Dominate New Jersey Devils 5-1

Nathan MacKinnon shines with two goals as Avalanche break scoring drought against Devils.

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche secured a decisive 5-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on February 26, 2025, snapping their two-game skid. Nathan MacKinnon had two power-play goals and added an assist, proving instrumental to the Avalanche's success. Mackenzie Blackwood, facing off against his former team, stopped 22 shots, enhancing his impressive records against New Jersey.

The Avalanche showcased their strong offensive capacity with three goals occurring within just 4:04 during the third period, transforming what had been a closely fought contest. With this victory, Colorado improved to 210-74-27 when Valeri Nichushkin is on the ice, as he returned after missing nearly two months due to injury.

Artturi Lehkonen started the scoring for Colorado at 8:54 of the first period. Lehkonen maneuvered around New Jersey defenders before sliding a backhander past Devils’ goaltender Jake Allen. Jack Hughes responded for New Jersey with his own goal, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with 11:32 left on the clock.

A pivotal moment came early in the third when the Devils took to the penalty box. Luke Hughes was penalized for slashing at 1:29, giving Colorado their third power-play opportunity. Just shy of the three-minute mark, Martin Necas unleashed a shot from the point. The puck ricocheted off Allen's pad to MacKinnon, who skillfully found the net, extending Colorado’s lead to 3-1.

Following MacKinnon's goal, the Avalanche struck again with explosive efficiency. At 14:14, MacKinnon showcased his finesse by knocking the puck out of the air and scoring on another power play, effectively doubling the Devils' troubles.

Coming off the bench, Casey Mittelstadt made his mark with yet another goal at 16:40. Moments later, Logan O’Connor capped off the goal frenzy at 18:18. Frustration boiled over for Allen as he left the game with 1:42 remaining, having allowed five goals on 36 shots. The Devils fell to 1-1 during their five-game road trip, unable to capitalize on their momentum.

Blackwood, who has historically performed well against the Devils, improved his record against them to 2-0 across three starts, allowing just one goal throughout those games. His previous history with New Jersey made this match especially meaningful for him.

With the victory, the Avalanche not only found their footing again but also embraced the re-integration of Nichushkin. He recorded five shots on goal during nearly 18 minutes of ice time, indicating his readiness to make significant contributions moving forward. His absence had been felt since December 31, but his return seemed to rejuvenate the team.

MacKinnon extended his home points streak to 15 games, marking the third occasion he has achieved such streaks at home. It’s no wonder he’s viewed as one of the league's elite players; his tireless work ethic continues to benefit the Avalanche immensely.

Despite the frustrating outcome, the Devils exhibited moments of resilience and skill throughout the game, demonstrating why they remain competitive. Coach Sheldon Keefe acknowledged Allen's struggle, explaining, “He was cramping up,” as they look to recalibrate following their recent performances.

The Avalanche now turn their focus to the upcoming match against Minnesota on Friday, promising fans more high-octane performances. Meanwhile, the Devils are scheduled to face Utah next, working to stabilize their road campaign.

This match served as yet another reminder of Colorado's offensive prowess, teetering on the brink of playoff contention. With players like MacKinnon and Nichushkin back on the ice and performative stability from Blackwood, fans have every reason to be enthusiastic about the Avalanche's prospects as they enter the latter part of the season.
