His viral success and personal struggles leave behind a lasting legacy.

The tragic death of Atlanta rapper OG Maco, best known for his 2014 viral hit "U Guessed It," has left the music world mourning the loss of one of its rising stars. Maco, born Benedict Chiajulam Ihesiba Jr., passed away on December 26 at the age of 32, after spending weeks hospitalized due to complications from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Reports surfaced confirming Maco was found unresponsive at his residence and rushed to the hospital on December 12. Initial fears about his condition were exacerbated when he fell comatose, and doctors struggled to conduct necessary brain scans amid concerns of toxin buildup. Despite being placed on life support, he was unable to be revived.

Maco’s family shared their grief on social media, stating, "With heavy hearts, we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beloved Ben, known to the world as OG Maco. His life was a testimony to resilience, creativity, and boundless love. Through his music, passion, and unwavering spirit, he touched so many lives and left a lasting impact." This emotional tribute captures the essence of Maco's influence as both an artist and individual.

Breaking onto the rap scene with his infectiously energetic song, "U Guessed It," OG Maco became known for his distinctive style and lyrical honesty. The track achieved significant success, even peaking at number 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 and leading to collaborations, including one with the rapper 2 Chainz. His entrance onto the music scene came as part of Quality Control Music and included recognition on the 2015 XXL Freshman list alongside notable artists like Fetty Wap and Vince Staples.

Reflecting on his life and achievements, fellow artists and industry professionals have taken to social media to pay their respects. Music executive Stevo wrote, "What you’ve done in your life... have been really nothing short of amazing bro. You’re a legend. Nobody can take away from what you did for this game and the city of Atlanta." He emphasized OG Maco's remarkable intellect and how his travels across the world showcased his deep appreciation for culture and community.

Warner Records VP of A&R, Malita Rice, echoed similar sentiments, reminiscing about the time Maco signed his record deal and the early days of his career. "I called Stevo and told him (QP) wanted to sign Maco and Maco went to the office and signed before Stevo got there," she recalled. Such testimonials highlight the deep connections and fond memories those close to Maco cherished.

OG Maco’s career wasn’t without its challenges. He faced significant health struggles, including surviving a serious car accident in 2016, which left him with multiple skull fractures and visual impairments. Following this, he battled with necrotizing fasciitis, which arose during routine medical treatments. Despite these hardships, Maco remained prolific and continued to produce music, showcasing his resilience and fighting spirit.

Several peers within the industry have recognized the weight of Maco’s loss, including rapper Nitty Scott who shared, "Damn, fly high @ogmaco 💔🕊️ love you forever." The community around him continues to express their condolences, illustrating the depth of compassion felt for Maco and those who shared the stage with him.

His untimely passing revives conversations about the dangers artists face, especially with rising gun violence associated with hip-hop. Musicians often find themselves at risk, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures to protect them. The discussions surrounding mental health advocacy sparked by Maco resonate strongly not just with fans but within the industry at large, as many artists grapple with the pressures of fame.
