Early Thursday morning, Yellowstone National Park was greeted by a familiar yet always unsettling visitor: an earthquake. At precisely 7:20 a.m. local time on July 16, 2026, a magnitude 3.3 quake rumbled beneath the iconic landscape, its epicenter located along the Grand Loop Road, just south of Canyon Junction. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor originated at a depth of 6.53 kilometers—just over four miles beneath the surface—making its presence known to at least 14 people within a 30-mile radius. We were hoping to see wolves, so we were waiting for the fog to lift," Benson told Cowboy State Daily. She described hearing what sounded like an explosion echoing through the valley. Then, everything went still—just for a moment—before the ground under her feet started to sway. "You could see some of the water down in the Yellowstone River swaying back and forth. When it started to slow down, you could hear the rumbling going throughout the entire valley."
The shaking lasted a little more than a minute, though Benson said it "seemed like forever." She steadied herself by grabbing a friend. When the tremor subsided, a Yellowstone ranger arrived, informing the group that they had been standing directly over the earthquake’s epicenter. "We were all shocked at the sound of it. The ranger told us that we’d heard the beginning of the earthquake," Benson recalled. The USGS notes that "unidentified booms" are sometimes reported at earthquake epicenters, but the exact cause remains a mystery. "I've never experienced anything like that, and hope to never experience that again. I was quite shaken," Benson admitted.
Despite the drama for those in the immediate vicinity, earthquakes are nothing new in Yellowstone. The most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Yellowstone’s modern history was a magnitude 6 event in 1975, which, according to Fox Weather, struck along the north-central boundary of the Yellowstone Caldera. Despite its strength, no injuries were reported, and park operations continued without interruption.
The July 16 earthquake was not the only tremor to rattle Wyoming that week. Just two days earlier, a magnitude 3.5 quake was detected west of Rock Springs, and on the same Thursday, a magnitude 3.2 event occurred near Little America in Sweetwater County. Elsewhere in the country, California’s Santa Cruz County experienced a preliminary magnitude 3.0 earthquake near Interlaken just after midnight on July 17, part of a pattern of moderate seismic activity nationwide. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there are roughly 500,000 detectable earthquakes worldwide each year, with about 100,000 felt by people and only 100 causing significant damage.
For those concerned about Yellowstone’s supervolcano, it’s important to separate fact from fiction. While the word "supervolcano" conjures images of catastrophic eruptions, scientists stress that Thursday’s quake was not volcanic in origin. "Because there are so many faults in the region and a lot of water moving around in the subsurface, Yellowstone is a recipe for lots and lots of earthquakes," Poland told Cowboy State Daily. "There’s nothing particularly anomalous about (a magnitude 3.3 earthquake), and none of these quakes are associated with any volcanic activity." The USGS and Yellowstone Volcano Observatory maintain a constant watch on the park’s magma system, hydrothermal features, and pressure valves. While Yellowstone’s past eruptions—most notably those 2.1 million, 1.2 million, and 640,000 years ago—were among the largest ever, forming a caldera 1,500 square miles across, there is no evidence that a catastrophic eruption is imminent or even likely in our lifetimes.
Still, the park’s seismic activity is closely monitored, not just for scientific interest but also for public safety and peace of mind. When a magnitude 3.9 quake struck Yellowstone in January 2025—the largest since 2023—it went undetected by the Raspberry Shake seismograph at the Wyoming Geological Survey headquarters in Laramie, some 350 miles away.
