Xbox Game Pass Adds Big Titles Amid Layoffs

Microsoft unveils a packed July Game Pass lineup, even as layoffs, studio departures, and missed subscription targets cast uncertainty over the future of its flagship gaming service.

It’s been a tumultuous week for Microsoft’s Xbox division, but as the dust settles from sweeping layoffs and strategic admissions, the company has unveiled its first wave of new Game Pass titles for July 2026. While the mood is mixed—excitement for fresh games tempered by corporate upheaval—players have a lot to dig into, with a varied lineup spanning genres and play styles, and a few notable farewells as well.

According to IGN, the backdrop to this announcement is anything but ordinary. Just yesterday, CEO Asha Sharma confirmed that 1,600 Xbox staff had been let go, with another 1,600 to follow in the next 12 months. Four studios are departing Microsoft entirely, part of what Sharma called “the most significant [restructure] in Xbox history.” Sharma didn’t mince words about what led to this moment, stating, “Our business today is not healthy. We are operating at margins that are 3-10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses. We entered Gen 9 with a smaller install base and a higher cost structure. To grow, we bet on Game Pass, multi-platform, and a broader portfolio of content. While those businesses have created meaningful value, they did not grow at the pace we expected. As that happened, our core business weakened, and we added more teams, more investment, and more time, hoping for a better outcome. And now the industry is facing the most severe hardware crisis in its history. We must reset Xbox.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that Microsoft had projected Game Pass subscriptions to reach 77 million this year, but the actual figure sits closer to 30 million. Ambitions for 100 million by 2030, once revealed during the FTC vs Microsoft trial in 2023, now seem remote. As Sharma acknowledged, “While those businesses have created meaningful value, they did not grow at the pace we expected.”

Yet, even as the company retools its strategy, the July lineup for Game Pass is brimming with new experiences. As of July 6, Winds of Arcana: Ruination is available on Cloud, Console, Handheld, and PC for Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium, and PC Game Pass subscribers. This 2.5D action Metroidvania follows Aryn and his comrades through a fractured world, where players wield magic and uncover ancient secrets. GameSpot describes the title as “story-rich” and “fully voiced,” promising a journey full of peril and discovery.

On July 9, two more games arrive. Gears of War: Reloaded—a remaster of the blockbuster original—hits Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, Handheld, and PC, now accessible through Game Pass Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass. The game boasts all post-launch content, including a bonus campaign act and an array of multiplayer maps and cosmetics. Also launching that day is Tamashika, a fast-paced arcade-style corridor shooter that challenges players to master flow, precision, and survival. Each run, as described by Xbox Wire, is “about control, timing, and keeping your mind in one place.”

The excitement ramps up starting July 13, when Game Pass will see daily releases for nearly a week. Kicking things off is Ascend to Zero, a day-one launch available on Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, Handheld, and PC for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. This action roguelike thrusts players into a devastated world, wielding time-bending powers to outlast relentless threats. GameSpot likens its gameplay to Hades, emphasizing its focus on quick reflexes and strategic mastery.

July 14 brings PBA Pro Bowling 2026 to Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, offering the “most realistic bowling simulation ever made,” with advanced physics and deep career progression. The following day, Quarantine Zone: The Last Check tasks players with managing a checkpoint in a collapsing city, screening survivors and holding back the undead—where, as Xbox Wire notes, “every choice matters, and one mistake could unleash the plague beyond your walls.”

On July 16, Mavrix by Matt Jones—designed by pro Red Bull athlete Matt Jones—delivers an open-world multiplayer experience for riders, letting players “ride everything, compete head-to-head, create your look, and build your career.” The next day, FixForce launches, a co-op extraction platformer where robots scavenge for parts and build structures out of junk, supporting up to five friends in their quest to fix what humanity left behind. Rounding out this streak, July 17 also sees the debut of Fogpiercer, a sci-fi roguelike deckbuilder for PC that challenges players to use clever positioning and environmental tactics to survive against bandit attacks.

Looking ahead to July 21, two major titles join the lineup. The Planet Crafter invites players to transform a hostile planet into a habitable world, either solo or in online co-op, by gathering resources, building bases, and geo-engineering an entire ecosystem. And for fans of classic skateboarding, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 arrives on Cloud, Console, and PC, offering both legendary games in one remastered package, fully updated in HD with all the pro skaters, levels, and tricks that made the originals iconic.

But it’s not all additions—Game Pass is also losing several titles on July 15. As reported by IGN and GameSpot, games departing the service include Dungeons of Hinterberg, EA Sports Football Club 24, Stellaris, Golf With Your Friends, Minami Lane, Powerwash Simulator, Shadow of the Tomb Raider Definitive Edition, Splitgate: Arena Reloaded, Super Fantasy Kingdom (Game Preview), and Techtonica (Game Preview). Xbox Wire encourages players to “save on these games now before they leave Game Pass!”

Alongside new releases, July brings notable updates and bonuses. The indie sensation Palworld celebrates its full 1.0 release on July 10, promising new locations and characters in its open-world survival and crafting adventure. Meanwhile, League of Legends introduces Locke, the Ashen Exorcist, a new mid-lane assassin champion available now with Game Pass benefits. Wuthering Waves, a story-rich open-world action RPG, updates on July 10, offering special in-game rewards for Game Pass subscribers, such as Morphable Echo, Premium Tuner, Shell Credit, and an exclusive Xbox Sigil.

Despite the uncertainty swirling around Xbox’s business model, the July Game Pass lineup is a testament to Microsoft’s ongoing investment in content and player engagement. Whether you’re a fan of shooters, strategy, sports, roguelikes, or open-world adventures, there’s something new to explore—at least, for now. As the company recalibrates its approach and the industry faces what Sharma calls “the most severe hardware crisis in its history,” Game Pass remains a focal point for both Microsoft’s ambitions and its challenges. For players, the next few weeks are packed with opportunity—so grab your controller, and make the most of it while you can.
