Willie Geist And Christina Geist Celebrate Decades Together

The TV host and his bestselling author wife share a love story that began in middle school and continues to shape their family and careers.

For television viewers across America, Willie Geist is a familiar presence—his affable demeanor anchoring NBC’s Sunday Today With Willie Geist and lending sharp wit to Morning Joe. Yet, behind the scenes, Geist’s story is as much about enduring love as it is about journalism. The heart of that story? His decades-long relationship with his wife, Christina Geist—a partnership that began in the unlikeliest of places: middle school.

Their journey together started at George Washington Middle School in Ridgewood, New Jersey. It was the first day of sixth grade, around 1993, and Willie, the new kid, was scanning the classroom, feeling a bit out of place. As he recalled in an August 2019 interview with Glamour, “I really remember thinking in my little 11-year-old brain, ‘Oh, she seems cute and cool.’ And it turns out I was right—because that was 33 years ago, and we’re married with kids.” Christina, meanwhile, remembered Willie as the kind of person who just stood out. “He’s a presence in any room he walks in, both because he tends to be taller than 95% of the people, but also because he’s just the type of person that the attention naturally shifts toward him,” she told Glamour.

Their early relationship was marked by the fits and starts of adolescence. They dated briefly during their freshman year of high school, only to break up and then reunite as juniors. Their bond deepened as they attended Vanderbilt University together. Still, as Christina explained, “When we got to college, we felt like we were supposed to break up because that’s what you’re supposed to do, but it didn’t really stick.” After college, they did part ways for a time, but eventually found their way back to each other. “I’m grateful that neither one of us was too proud at age 25 when we were figuring out how to get back together and make it work out. You have to really look yourself in the mirror at certain moments in your life and say, ‘What’s most important here?’ For me, that was being together,” Christina reflected.

When it came time to move from friendship to romance, Willie’s approach was memorable, if not exactly traditional. On an April 2022 episode of Today With Hoda & Jenna, he recounted the moment he broke out of the so-called friend zone: “I have a very romantic secret. I made out with her on the roof of my friend’s house with some warm Bud Light in the red-hot fall of 1991.” When pressed by Hoda Kotb, he added, “I think we were both sensing it.” For Willie, it was a leap of faith that paid off. “I was so excited because I always liked her, I think, in my heart. We were truly good friends and we had the same group of friends. But I always liked her. I didn’t know how she felt until that roof.”

The couple’s enduring friendship has remained the bedrock of their marriage. “We were buddies first,” Willie told Kotb. “And I think even today, all these years later, that’s the foundation of our relationship is that we were always friends.” That sense of camaraderie and mutual respect has carried them through more than two decades of marriage. On May 24, 2025, Willie marked their anniversary with a heartfelt Instagram tribute: “[Twenty-two] years ago today, my middle school crush became my wife. I love you, @ChristinaSharkeyGeist… since ‘86.” Christina echoed the sentiment, writing, “05.24.03. To be so certain about someone, yet so uncertain about the future ahead, is the ultimate leap of faith. I’m so glad we jumped. Happy 22 @williegeist.”

Family life became an important next chapter for the Geists. Their daughter, Lucie, was born in June 2007, followed by their son, George, in July 2009. Willie has spoken candidly about the joys and challenges of fatherhood. During a June 2024 segment with other Today dads, he reflected, “I think there’s something old school about being a dad. You want to, in their eyes, be the hero. And showing that kind of vulnerability … maybe you feel like that puts a little bit of a dent in that. But I think it’s so important to do it and reveal that life is not all perfect. Things come up along the way. You are vulnerable.”

Christina Geist, meanwhile, has carved out her own impressive path. According to her website, she is the cofounder and strategy director of True Geist, a branding and design firm, and the founder of Boombox Gifts. Her creative energy extends to children’s literature, where she’s become a New York Times bestselling author. Her books include Buddy’s New Buddy, Sorry Grown-Ups, You Can’t Go To School!, and Buddy’s Bedtime Battery. In April 2026, Christina self-published Before You Fly Away: Life Lessons from Home, a book she wrote as a gift to Lucie before her daughter left for college. Appearing on Today With Jenna & Sheinelle to promote the book, Christina explained her decision to self-publish: “It just leaves you in a little bit more control at the beginning, which, for me, worked out well. And, you know, lesson 42 in the book is, ‘Figure it out. You’re 100 percent capable,’ and this is one of those moments.”

Home for the Geist family is in South Salem, New York—a scenic spot north of the city. Their house, notably, once belonged to actor Stanley Tucci, adding a touch of Hollywood lore to their suburban life. Like many of Willie’s NBC and MS Now colleagues, they’ve chosen to settle in the greater New York area, balancing big-city careers with a quieter, family-oriented lifestyle.

Throughout their years together, the Geists have made public appearances that reflect both their commitment to each other and to causes they care about. In October 2021, they attended the “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Cure Parkinson’s” gala in New York City, supporting the Michael J. Fox Foundation. More recently, in April 2025, the whole family was photographed at “A Country Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s” benefit gala in Nashville, Tennessee, further underscoring their dedication to philanthropy and community.

Willie’s professional life continues at full throttle. Sunday Today With Willie Geist airs Sundays at 8 a.m. on NBC, while Morning Joe remains a staple of weekday mornings. Christina’s entrepreneurial and literary pursuits keep her equally busy. Yet, amid the whirlwind of public life, the couple’s story is grounded in the simple, enduring truth that friendship—nurtured since childhood—can be the strongest foundation for a lifelong partnership.

For fans who watch Willie Geist deliver the news each week, it’s clear that behind the polished television persona is a man whose greatest story just might be the one he’s written at home—with Christina, Lucie, and George by his side.
