Walt Disney World Unveils Summer Overhaul With New Rides

Major attractions, character debuts, and infrastructure upgrades greet guests as Walt Disney World launches its largest multi-park expansion in decades.

Walt Disney World is rolling into the summer of 2026 with a blockbuster slate of new attractions, entertainment, and infrastructure upgrades, all part of a sweeping transformation that’s set to reshape the resort for years to come. For guests arriving between May 22 and May 26, 2026, the magic is especially palpable, as five major openings across all four theme parks promise a fresh wave of excitement—and a few logistical headaches, too, as crowds descend to be among the first to experience the changes.

According to official announcements from The Walt Disney Company and detailed coverage by WDWInfo and Disney Parks Blog, this five-day window marks one of the largest simultaneous debuts in Walt Disney World history. EPCOT’s beloved Soarin’ attraction has swapped its global vistas for a homegrown adventure: Soarin’ Across America. Debuting May 26, this limited-time overlay celebrates the United States’ 250th anniversary with dazzling aerial footage of landmarks like the Grand Canyon and iconic city skylines. The ride features a newly orchestrated version of the classic Soarin’ theme, and while Disney hasn’t set an end date, industry watchers expect it to stick around through at least 2027.

“Starting May 26, Soarin’ Across America will debut in celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary,” The Walt Disney Company declared in its official statement, setting the tone for a summer that’s as much about national pride as it is about theme park thrills.

But Soarin’ isn’t the only headline-grabber. Over at Hollywood Studios, the curtain rises on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, a riotous reimagining of Disney World’s only upside-down coaster. With multiple on-ride music tracks and the comedic chaos of Jim Henson’s beloved characters, each ride promises a unique experience—much like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, but with a distinctly Muppet twist. The same day, Hollywood Studios also unveils The Walt Disney Studios Courtyard, a reimagined outdoor space, and a brand-new show: Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! Later in the summer, guests can look forward to The Magic of Disney Animation, featuring a drawing class led by an Olaf Audio-Animatronics figure.

Animal Kingdom is also in the spotlight, welcoming Bluey’s Wild World at Conservation Station. For the first time, the hit preschool character Bluey takes center stage at Disney World, with interactive games, animal encounters, and character meet-and-greets. It’s a move that’s already generating buzz among families with young children—and, let’s be honest, plenty of nostalgic adults, too.

Not to be outdone, the resort’s Cool KIDS’ SUMMER event returns across all parks, bringing Jessie’s Roundup to Magic Kingdom’s Diamond Horseshoe for a Western-themed revue, and transforming EPCOT’s CommuniCore Hall into GoofyCore, complete with dance parties and character meet-and-greets. Pop-up entertainment and family-friendly activities ensure there’s something for everyone, no matter which park you choose.

Star Wars fans have their own reason to celebrate. On May 22, a brand-new Mandalorian Mission takes over Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Galaxy’s Edge. The updated storyline, featuring Din Djarin and Grogu, offers fresh scenarios and dialogue, replacing the previous Hondo coaxium plot. Whether you’re piloting the Falcon or manning its guns, the experience feels entirely new—just in time for the Mandalorian’s big-screen debut.

All these changes, of course, mean bigger crowds. Multiple sources, including Disney Parks Blog and WDWInfo, warn that wait times typically surge 40-50% during opening week events. The advice is clear: book early and plan strategically if you hope to catch these new experiences without spending half your day in line. Adding to the logistical puzzle, both Disney water parks will open simultaneously on May 26, offering complimentary access to Disney Resort hotel guests on arrival day—a perk that’s sure to draw even more visitors.

Behind the scenes, Walt Disney World has also been busy with infrastructure upgrades. Since August 2025, the Transportation & Ticket Center (TTC)—the main gateway for guests heading to Magic Kingdom—has been undergoing a phased refurbishment. According to Inside the Magic and BlogMickey, the project has seen the removal of quarter-century-old railings, the installation of neutral gray pavement, and a switch to portable stanchions for more flexible queue management. The final barriers went up in early May 2026, but as of now, Disney has yet to announce an official completion date. The work is already making a difference for crowd flow, but the full impact will only be clear once the last construction walls come down.

Looking ahead to 2027, Disney’s expansion plans show no signs of slowing. As reported by Mickey Visit and echoed throughout Disney’s official channels, Animal Kingdom will welcome an Encanto ride and an Indiana Jones adventure in the all-new Tropical Americas land, which replaces the now-closed DinoLand U.S.A. The Encanto attraction will take guests inside the Madrigals’ magical Casita on the day Antonio receives his gift, while the Indiana Jones ride will repurpose the former DINOSAUR track system for a new, temple-exploring storyline. Both rides promise cutting-edge Audio-Animatronics and immersive storytelling, continuing Disney’s tradition of blending technology with heart.

The new land will also feature a whimsical animal carousel inspired by Disney and Pixar favorites, plus one of the largest quick-service restaurants on property. On the hospitality front, the Disney Lakeshore Lodge—a deluxe Disney Vacation Club resort—will open near Bay Lake, on the former site of River Country water park. Over at Disney’s flagship hotels, the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa’s multi-year refurbishment is slated for completion in early 2027, and the Contemporary Resort’s renovations, including Incredibles-themed rooms and refreshed amenities, are now expected to wrap up by late 2027.

Transportation is getting a boost, too. In 2027, Magic Kingdom will add a fourth ferry boat, the Meg Gilbert Crofton, named for the former Walt Disney World President. This addition is designed to ease congestion on the busy TTC-to-Magic Kingdom route, a welcome relief as the park prepares for its largest transformation ever. Upcoming expansions include the Cars-inspired Piston Peak National Park in Frontierland and a much-anticipated Disney Villains land “beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.”

Even classic attractions are getting a facelift. The Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom is expected to receive its first major update since 1994, including a new Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney and refreshed storylines for John, Sarah, and their family. Disney hasn’t announced a closure date, but most insiders believe these changes will arrive in 2027.

All told, Walt Disney World’s 2026-2027 transformation is a testament to the company’s commitment to innovation, nostalgia, and, above all, guest experience. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned Disney veteran, there’s never been a more exciting—or busier—time to plan your trip. With new rides, beloved characters, and a flurry of upgrades, the world’s most famous vacation destination is proving that the magic is far from finished.
