Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible Future Sparks Debate

With his on-screen exit looming, Cruise’s financial stakes in Mission: Impossible and his ongoing ties to Scientology keep the Hollywood icon in the spotlight.

Tom Cruise, one of Hollywood’s most enduring and enigmatic stars, is once again at the center of attention. As he approaches his 64th birthday, Cruise finds himself at a crossroads—celebrated for his decades-long reign as Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise, lauded for his resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, and scrutinized for his ongoing ties to the Church of Scientology. The past year has seen Cruise’s public and private worlds collide in ways that only amplify his complex legacy.

After nearly three decades as the face of Mission: Impossible, Cruise signaled that 2025’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning would be his swan song as Ethan Hunt. According to OK! Magazine, Cruise, 63, has portrayed the iconic secret agent across eight films since 1996, building an action legacy that few can rival. At the May 2025 premiere, he reflected, “Just let us show the movie tonight. This is like 30 years culmination of this, and I think that this is – I’d rather just people see it and enjoy.” He added, “We’ve had an amazing time doing it and it’s been a lot of fun and (I) just want you all to enjoy it, enjoy this and know everything – the culmination has come to this moment right now and it’s been a lot of fun.”

Yet, the story doesn’t end there. On March 8, 2026, during the 53rd Saturn Awards in Los Angeles, Cruise hinted that the franchise’s future might not be so final after all. As he accepted the Best Actor award and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning took home Best Action/Adventure Film, he teased, “Thank you McQ (Mission: Impossible director Chris McQuarrie) for trying to kill me so many times for all these years. I appreciate it.” He continued, “I feel so privileged to be able to do what I do. It’s pretty obvious that I love movies, I love them. And I’ve loved making them even more. And I love the audience for allowing me to still do it.” Most tantalizingly, Cruise said there were “many more to come,” leaving fans and industry insiders speculating about his future involvement—on or off screen.

Behind the scenes, Cruise’s connection to the franchise appears unshakable. An industry source told OK!, “There is a strong expectation that Tom will continue to benefit from the franchise in a significant way, even if he steps back from acting in it. The structure of these deals means he remains deeply tied to its success.” The source added, “With additional projects, spin-offs, or future installments under discussion, the long-term financial upside could be extraordinary—we are talking about potential earnings that run into the billions over time.” Another insider reinforced, “Even if Tom is no longer leading the films in the traditional sense, he has positioned himself in such a way that he will continue to profit from the franchise’s evolution. His influence behind the scenes is considerable. The value of Mission: Impossible as a global property remains extremely high, and there is significant incentive to keep it going in some capacity.”

Director Chris McQuarrie, who has helmed multiple entries in the series, received the Visionary Award from Cruise at the Saturn Awards, underscoring the creative partnership that has fueled the franchise’s ongoing success. The ceremony itself was a testament to the power of blockbuster filmmaking, with James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash dominating the science fiction category and performances by Elle Fanning and Sigourney Weaver also recognized.

Of course, Cruise’s recent achievements come against the backdrop of a tumultuous period for Hollywood. The COVID-19 pandemic brought the global film industry to its knees, halting productions and shuttering cinemas. Yet Cruise pressed on, filming Mission: Impossible 7 in 2023 under strict safety protocols. The film, released that year, became a blockbuster and, as Hungama Express noted, was said to have "helped save Hollywood during the pandemic."

Not everyone agrees with that narrative, though. Actor Tom Holland, star of Uncharted, offered a cheeky rejoinder in an interview with Total Film: “We also made this film at the height of COVID. I know Tom Cruise loves to say he brought film industry back, but he forgot about this little film called Uncharted that was shooting four months before he was.” Holland’s film, co-starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Ruben Fleischer, followed a daring quest for the lost fortune of Ferdinand Magellan. The debate over who truly "saved" Hollywood may never be settled, but there’s no denying Cruise’s central role in the industry’s pandemic-era recovery.

While his professional exploits remain front-page news, Cruise’s personal life continues to generate intrigue—especially his relationship with the Church of Scientology. Despite keeping a lower profile on the subject since the late 2000s, Cruise was photographed in the front row at the Church’s annual celebration of founder L. Ron Hubbard’s birthday on March 14, 2026, at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida. According to OK! Magazine and reporting by Scientology whistleblower Tony Ortega’s The Underground Bunker, Cruise was seen smiling and clapping as church leader David Miscavige addressed the congregation. Fellow celebrities John Travolta and Bodhi and Jenna Elfman were also present.

Experts suggest Cruise’s decision to avoid public commentary on Scientology is strategic. Evan Nierman, founder of Red Banyan crisis PR, told Us Weekly last year, “He’s been very effective at not shining a light on that and instead letting the power of his films and his stunt work speak for itself.” Marc Headley, a former Scientologist, added, “[Tom’s] been in a decades-long bromance with a controversial man [David Miscavige]… I suspect the more people knew about Tom Cruise’s close relationship with Scientology, the less they would spend supporting him and his activities.” Despite the controversy, Cruise remains a fixture at major Scientology events, including the annual Patrons Ball in 2025.

His personal life has also been the subject of headlines, particularly following his 2025 breakup with actress Ana de Armas. The split, described by RadarOnline as “a collision between her freedom and his relentless discipline,” left Cruise reportedly reeling. “He’s going around saying he was the one who ended things, but it’s clear he’s in pain,” one source said. “He’s uneasy, isolated, and overthinking everything.” While there’s no direct evidence that Scientology played a role in the breakup, the timing and Cruise’s continued involvement with the church have fueled speculation.

As Cruise stands at the intersection of blockbuster cinema, pandemic resilience, and personal controversy, his legacy only grows more layered. Whether or not he ever returns as Ethan Hunt, his influence on Hollywood—and the broader cultural conversation—remains undeniable.
