It’s been nearly a decade since Tesla first promised the automotive world a next-generation Roadster that would redefine what’s possible for an electric sports car. Now, with a dramatic flair befitting its long-awaited arrival, the company has set October 1, 2026, as the date for a major reveal—one that’s already causing a stir not just among car enthusiasts, but also in the skies above Waco, Texas.

According to multiple outlets, including Drive Tesla Canada and BASENOR, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over SpaceX’s McGregor, Texas test facility. The restriction, identified as FAA NOTAM FDC 6/3825, became active on September 18 and will remain in place until October 2 at noon UTC. It covers a 1.5-nautical-mile radius around the Waco VORTAC area and extends from the surface up to 10,000 feet above ground level, effectively clearing the airspace over the very spot where Tesla’s event is set to unfold.

The FAA’s official notice doesn’t mention Tesla or the Roadster event by name—standard procedure for such filings. Instead, it cites hazards under 14 CFR 91.137(a)(3), temporarily limiting aircraft operations for operational safety. Still, the timing and location are hardly a coincidence. As BASENOR points out, the overlap between the TFR and the Roadster reveal date is “not subtle.” The McGregor site, a sprawling complex where SpaceX tests rocket engines and propulsion systems, is no stranger to dramatic engineering feats. Now, it’s poised to host what could be Tesla’s most theatrical car launch yet.

The event’s teaser phrase, “Go for launch,” offers a wink to the shared DNA between Tesla and SpaceX—both helmed by Elon Musk. Tesla has hinted that the new Roadster will feature a SpaceX-inspired thruster package, a nod to the company’s aerospace ambitions. In fact, Musk has gone so far as to claim the car will be able to “fly” using cold-gas thrusters, though whether that means a literal lift-off or just blistering acceleration remains to be seen. According to Autonocion, the Roadster is expected to sport four motors, a feature currently found on only a handful of electric vehicles worldwide.

But behind the spectacle lies a story of delays and shifting promises. The second-generation Roadster was first unveiled as a concept back in November 2017, with an ambitious production target of 2020. That deadline came and went, as Tesla focused on higher-volume models like the Model Y, Cybertruck, and Semi. As of January 2025, the Roadster was still listed as “in development,” with no factory location or production capacity disclosed. Even now, the official Tesla Roadster page advertises jaw-dropping specs—0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds, a top speed beyond 250 mph, and a range of 620 miles—but these remain manufacturer targets, not independently verified results.

Reservations for the Roadster reopened on September 19, 2026, but not without a hefty price tag. Would-be buyers must pony up a $5,000 deposit and wire an additional $45,000 within ten days, all before knowing the final purchase price or even the definitive specs of the car. As Autonocion wryly notes, “The estimated purchase price of the vehicle, if provided, is only an estimate. We are still working on what options, features and hardware the vehicle will have and so cannot confirm the exact price just yet.” For some, the leap of faith is part of the Tesla mystique; for others, it’s a gamble on a promise that’s already stretched over a decade.

Despite the anticipation, Wall Street’s reaction has been muted. Tesla shares closed at $364.27 on September 18, down 0.53% for the day, even as trading volume spiked to 51.8 million shares—31% above the recent average, according to Yahoo Finance data cited by Reuters. Analyst price targets for the stock now range from $360 to $480, reflecting broader debates over Tesla’s future in autonomy, robotics, and profit margins. Notably, even a full 10,000-car run of the Roadster at an assumed $250,000 apiece would generate $2.5 billion in revenue, amounting to just 2.4% of Tesla’s $105.2 billion consensus revenue for 2026. In other words, the Roadster is more about brand prestige than bottom-line impact—at least for now.

What’s fueling the skepticism? Some of it is rooted in Tesla’s history of ambitious claims and delayed deliveries. The original 2017 announcement promised a car that would seat four, accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under two seconds, and travel over 600 miles on a single charge. Over the years, CEO Elon Musk has doubled down on the car’s extraordinary potential, even suggesting that SpaceX cold-gas thrusters could lift the vehicle off the ground. Yet, as Autonocion points out, “Tesla has presented grandiose concepts before, only to never deliver.” The Cybertruck, once another symbol of Tesla’s disruptive spirit, has faced its own share of criticism and production woes.

Still, the October 1 event is shaping up to be more than just a press conference. The scale of the FAA’s flight restriction—1.5 miles wide and 10,000 feet high—suggests something big is afoot. As BASENOR editorializes, “A 10,000-foot airspace ceiling over a 1.5-mile radius is not a routine precaution for a press conference.
