Teenager Sentenced After Murdering Mother In North Wales

Police release arrest footage as court hears disturbing details of Tristan Roberts’ premeditated attack and the devastating impact on his family.

The chilling case of Tristan Thomas Roberts, an 18-year-old from North Wales, has shaken the local community and drawn national attention after police released arrest footage and CCTV images following his conviction for the brutal murder of his mother, Angela Jane Shellis. The sequence of events, which unfolded over several harrowing hours, has been described by the presiding judge as "extremely unusual," leaving a family and community grappling with the unimaginable aftermath.

According to North Wales Police, Roberts was arrested on October 24, 2025—the same day his mother’s body was discovered in undergrowth beside a footpath near Morfa nature reserve. The arrest, captured on police body cameras and CCTV, shows Roberts standing outside the home he shared with Ms Shellis, displaying no emotion as officers placed him in handcuffs. As reported by multiple outlets, he spoke only to ask, "Do you want me to drop everything?" as he was detained, a moment that has since become symbolic of the case’s disturbing nature.

Angela Jane Shellis, 48, worked as a teaching assistant at Rhyl High School and was described by her surviving son as the "most important person" in his life. The tragedy began late on October 23, 2025, when Roberts initiated a violent attack against his mother at their shared residence. The assault, which started around 11pm and continued until 3:30am, was not only prolonged but meticulously documented by Roberts himself. He used a voice recorder to capture the ordeal, producing audio clips so distressing that the court deemed them unfit to be played during his trial.

Details presented at Mold Crown Court revealed that Roberts attacked and strangled his mother while she remained conscious, fully aware of his intentions. During the attack, Ms Shellis repeatedly pleaded with her son to call emergency services, but her cries went unheeded. Displaying a disturbing level of premeditation, Roberts forced his mother to don a balaclava helmet and led her through a railway line to a secluded area. There, he instructed her to sit on a bench and began speaking in an American accent—a detail that prosecutors highlighted as part of the psychological torment inflicted on his victim.

As Ms Shellis became increasingly frightened and begged Roberts not to kill her, he produced a hammer and struck her four times. One blow shattered the side of her skull, while others caused significant soft tissue damage. In the aftermath, Roberts dragged his mother’s body approximately 100 meters before leaving her in the overgrowth near the footpath, a scene later documented in police photographs showing a blood-stained path, gloves, a hammer, and the walking crutch Ms Shellis had used before her death.

The court also heard that Roberts had an extensive digital footprint indicating his intentions. He maintained 16 separate accounts on the social media platform Discord, where he discussed plans to kill his mother for "revenge and justice" and even referenced an "American Psycho" style murder. Two weeks prior to the killing, on October 10, 2025, Roberts used an AI assistant called DeepSeek to inquire about removing blood from walls and floors—a chilling precursor to the crime. He subsequently purchased disposable gloves and a knife, raising suspicions from a cashier who retained a copy of the receipt. Roberts continued to seek advice from DeepSeek, asking whether a hammer or knife would be more effective for his purposes. The AI reportedly suggested a hammer would be better suited to his intentions.

After his arrest, Roberts was quickly identified as the primary suspect and charged with murder four days later. Last month, he pleaded guilty to the charge at Mold Crown Court. On March 25, 2026, Roberts was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 22 years and 34 days, taking into account the 148 days he had already spent in custody. Only after serving this minimum term will he be eligible for parole, and he will remain on license for the rest of his life.

The impact on the family has been devastating. Ethan Roberts, Angela’s surviving son, delivered a heart-wrenching statement during the sentencing hearing, describing the "unbearable" grief and anger he has endured since his mother’s death. "The day will forever remain a blur," he said, adding, "I am a shell of the person I was. The most important person in my life is now gone. Mum was always there for me no matter what." Ethan expressed not only sorrow but also anger at himself for not being present to prevent the tragedy, a sentiment echoed by many in the community who knew Ms Shellis as a dedicated educator and caring mother.

Presiding over the sentencing, the judge emphasized the extraordinary and devastating nature of the crime. Addressing Roberts directly, he stated: "You not only ended your mother’s life—you caused dreadful anguish to the whole family. The personal statements described how their lives have been devastated. No sentence I can pass can reflect their loss." The judge insisted that only a mandatory life sentence was appropriate, given the gravity and premeditation involved in the case.

The release of arrest footage and crime scene images following the sentencing has further underscored the brutality of the attack and the calculated steps Roberts took both before and after the murder. The footage, now widely circulated by North Wales Police, provides a stark reminder of the events that led to one family’s irreparable loss and a community’s shock.

Beyond the immediate horror, the case has prompted broader discussions about the role of technology and social media in enabling and documenting violent crimes. Roberts’ use of Discord to detail his intentions and his reliance on AI for advice on committing and concealing the murder have raised troubling questions about digital platforms’ capacity to detect and prevent such behavior. The cashier’s decision to retain a receipt after a suspicious knife purchase, while ultimately not preventing the tragedy, illustrates the challenges faced by individuals and authorities in recognizing and responding to warning signs.

As the community mourns the loss of Angela Jane Shellis, attention now turns to the lessons that can be learned from this deeply unsettling case. For those closest to Ms Shellis, the pain remains raw and the questions many. Yet, amid the grief, there is a collective resolve to remember her as a devoted mother and educator, and to seek ways to prevent such tragedies in the future.
