Sporting Lisbon Faces Summer Transfer Turmoil As Premier League Clubs Circle

Arsenal, Tottenham, and Aston Villa target Sporting Lisbon’s Gyokeres, Borges, and Catamo amid contract disputes and high-profile managerial changes.

The transfer market is heating up as Sporting Lisbon finds itself at the center of a whirlwind summer, with star striker Viktor Gyokeres, manager Rui Borges, and winger Geny Catamo all drawing significant interest from Premier League clubs. Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Aston Villa are all keeping close tabs on the Portuguese side’s prized assets, setting the stage for a dramatic few months ahead.

Viktor Gyokeres, Sporting’s prolific Swedish striker, has become one of the most coveted players in Europe after two sensational seasons in Portugal. Since arriving from Coventry two years ago, Gyokeres has racked up an astonishing 97 goals in just 102 appearances, a record that has made him a top target for clubs in need of attacking firepower. Arsenal, in particular, have made signing a new striker their top priority after finishing second in the Premier League for three consecutive seasons. Manchester United, still searching for answers up front after Rasmus Hojlund’s struggles, are also in the hunt.

But Gyokeres’ heart is set on a move to the Emirates. According to Portuguese outlet Record, the 27-year-old is "willing to wait until the end to see his dream of playing for Arsenal become reality." His patience, however, is being tested by a bitter dispute over his transfer fee. Sporting is holding out for a much higher sum than Gyokeres’ representatives claim was agreed upon last September. While Gyokeres’ camp insists there was a gentleman’s agreement for a €70 million (£60 million) deal including add-ons, the club is pointing to the €100 million (£84 million) release clause in his contract.

The situation has grown tense. Sporting club president Frederico Varandas has accused Gyokeres’ team of attempting to "blackmail" the club, an accusation that has only deepened the standoff. Gyokeres’ agent, Hasan Çetinkaya, reportedly has evidence to back up their side of the story, including an audio message from Sporting’s sporting director Hugo Viana confirming the agreement. According to Record, Çetinkaya is considering making this message public to clarify the player’s motives and win over Sporting fans.

Frustration is mounting. Gyokeres is said to be "very upset" with Sporting’s current stance and has made his feelings clear to the club’s hierarchy. Portuguese outlet A Bola reports that he has even threatened to go on strike, vowing to "speak at the right time." For now, though, patience remains the watchword, with Gyokeres and his team holding out hope that Arsenal will get their man before the summer window closes.

While all eyes are on Gyokeres, Sporting’s manager Rui Borges is also attracting attention from England. Tottenham Hotspur, reeling from a tumultuous season that saw them sack Thomas Frank after just eight months in charge, are considering Borges as a potential replacement. Frank’s tenure ended after a dismal run of just two wins in 17 matches, leaving Spurs in 15th place and only five points above the relegation zone.

Croatian coach Igor Tudor has been installed as interim manager until the end of the season, but Tottenham’s leadership duo, Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange, are already planning for the summer. Their preferred targets are Mauricio Pochettino—currently managing the United States national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup—and Roberto De Zerbi, who recently resigned from Marseille after a heavy defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Borges, who led Sporting to a league and domestic double last season and currently has his team sitting second in Portugal’s Primeira Liga behind FC Porto, is seen as a wildcard option should the preferred candidates prove unattainable.

At just 44 years old, Borges has enhanced his reputation with his tactical adaptability and man-management skills, not to mention a memorable Champions League campaign that saw Sporting beat European champions Paris Saint-Germain and qualify automatically for the last 16. Sporting have moved to protect their asset, inserting a €20 million (£17.3 million) release clause into Borges’ contract, which runs until 2027. While his lack of Premier League experience is a concern for some at Tottenham, his recent success in Portugal cannot be ignored. As GiveMeSport put it, "the club cannot afford such risks given their precarious position," but Borges’ achievements have certainly put him on the radar.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are keeping a close eye on another Sporting star. Geny Catamo, the Mozambique international winger, has just signed a contract extension with Sporting Lisbon that keeps him at the club until June 2029. The new deal, reported by Portuguese news outlet Record, includes a hefty £51 million release clause. Catamo, who joined Sporting as a youngster in 2019 and has since made 115 appearances with 18 goals (including five this season), is seen as a potential target to bolster Unai Emery’s attacking options at Villa Park.

Villa’s interest comes at a critical time. After being knocked out of the FA Cup by Newcastle United, Emery’s side remains third in the Premier League, behind Arsenal and Manchester City. The club will need to decide whether to make a move for Catamo this summer, with his contract extension meaning Sporting are under no immediate pressure to sell. Catamo’s journey has included loan spells at Vitoria and Maritimo to aid his development, and his 14 caps for Mozambique highlight his international pedigree.

Back at Villa, the focus is on the Premier League run-in and an upcoming home clash with Leeds United. But with the summer window looming, the club’s recruitment team will be weighing their options. Catamo’s versatility and experience could provide much-needed depth, especially as Villa look to consolidate their position among England’s elite.

For Sporting Lisbon, the coming months promise to be a test of resolve. With their top scorer agitating for a move, their manager linked with a Premier League job, and their rising star winger now protected by a new contract, the Lisbon club faces a delicate balancing act. Can they hold on to their key figures, or will the lure of England’s top flight prove too strong?

One thing’s for certain: the transfer saga surrounding Sporting’s trio is far from over. As the summer progresses, expect more twists, turns, and perhaps a few surprises before the dust finally settles on this high-stakes football drama.
