South Korea Bolsters Missile Defenses Amid North Korean Advances

South Korea is ramping up its efforts to reinforce its air defense capabilities amid rising threats from North Korea and evolving patterns of modern warfare. The government’s recent moves—denying rumors of massive North Korean troop deployments to Ukraine while simultaneously accelerating missile purchases from the United States—reflect a complex and rapidly changing security landscape on the Korean Peninsula and beyond.

In addition, North Korea has supplied Russia with a staggering 15 million 152mm artillery shells, underlining the depth of Pyongyang’s involvement in the conflict and its willingness to use the war as a testing ground for its military hardware.

Perhaps most alarming to South Korean strategists is the evidence that North Korean short-range ballistic missiles—used in the Russia-Ukraine conflict—have likely improved in accuracy and performance. This is due not only to operational experience but also to Russian technical assistance. Meanwhile, the development of submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) and nuclear-powered submarines is ongoing, though experts believe it will take considerable time before these platforms become operational.

On the ground, North Korea is also shoring up its conventional defenses. Military officials have observed an uptick in the installation of mines and fences near the Military Demarcation Line, as well as the forward deployment of advanced rocket artillery and new self-propelled guns. All these moves are seen as part of Pyongyang’s broader effort to increase military fortifications along the border.

South Korea’s response to these developments has been multifaceted. One of the most visible steps has been the decision to bolster missile stockpiles through purchases from the United States.
