It’s not every day that a television show manages to both reinvent itself and preserve its legacy. Yet, as Show Me the Money 12 (SMTM12) storms back onto screens in 2026, it’s clear that Korea’s longest-running hip-hop survival program has pulled off just that. After a four-year hiatus, the show’s return isn’t just a comeback—it’s a full-blown cultural event, drawing tens of thousands of hopefuls and captivating millions of fans across platforms both old and new.
Producer Choi Hyo-jin, the creative force behind SMTM12, recently sat down with reporters at the CJ ENM Center in Seoul’s Sangam district. Reflecting on the journey, Choi described the audition scene with a sense of wonder: “Many people came with the feeling of wanting to participate in a big event after a long time. The sight of teenagers and college students coming to the preliminaries in groups felt like a picnic.” According to Yonhap News, this season attracted around 36,000 applicants, a record for the show and a testament to its enduring appeal.
But the world has changed since the last season aired in 2022. The influence of hip-hop in Korea’s mainstream has waned, and both media landscapes and viewer preferences have shifted dramatically. “Balancing the familiar points that make you think, ‘Ah, this is what SMTM is all about,’ with the need for change was tough,” Choi admitted. “The planning period was much longer than usual because the media environment and viewer tastes have changed so much.”
Yet, despite these challenges, SMTM12 has been met with remarkable success. The show topped FunDex’s integrated buzz rankings for the fourth week of February 2026 and racked up over 670 million cumulative views across YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, as reported by Good Data Corporation. The program airs every Thursday at 9:20 PM on both Mnet and the OTT platform TVING, reflecting a deliberate strategy to reach audiences wherever they are.
One of this season’s boldest innovations is the introduction of a dual-track broadcast format. The main competition unfolds on Mnet, while the spin-off Show Me the Money 12: World of Yacha streams exclusively on TVING. “I wanted to showcase the various charms of the contestants in different ways, so we operated ‘World of Yacha’ separately,” Choi told Star News. “Because it’s on OTT, there’s more freedom of expression. I felt viewers wanted more stories. Running the dual-track was an interesting experience, and I wonder if we might try something new with hip-hop artists in the future.”
In World of Yacha, eliminated contestants are given a dramatic second chance—battling it out in underground rap contests for a shot at re-entering the main show. This format, which concluded its first part with five episodes in February, was so well received that a second part was launched. Rapper Untel, one of the season’s breakout stars, gained significant popularity through this spin-off despite his earlier elimination. Choi remarked, “He seemed to have let himself go and showed a flexible side in his verses. It felt like he enjoyed participating.”
Choi explained that the spin-off was conceived to address a fundamental limitation of the main competition. “It’s hard to capture all the efforts and musical colors of rappers within the strict audition framework,” Choi told Yonhap News. “I wanted to show the diverse charms of people who love hip-hop and keep challenging themselves.” The partnership between Mnet and TVING was planned from the beginning, aiming for the best of both worlds: Mnet’s broad accessibility and TVING’s creative freedom.
As the show entered its crucial eighth episode on March 5, 2026, the focus shifted to the highly anticipated ‘music source mission.’ Twenty contestants, whittled down from a staggering 36,000, teamed up with the season’s four producer duos to debut new songs—a pivotal moment that Choi called “the opening of the second act of this season.” The teams, each with their own musical flair and philosophy, are as follows: Zico & Crush with Kim Ha-on, Lafsandu, Mav, and Jung Jun-hyuk; Gray & Loco with Kwon Oh-seon, Mason Home, Milli, Oxynova, and Poggy at the Back Home; J-Tong & Huhki with Now I’m Young, Double Down, Royal44, Young Shura, and Flicky Bang; and Jay Park & Lil Moshpit with DK, Genethezilla, Jeffrey White, Tray B, and FloYousik.
Producer Choi expressed unwavering confidence in the teams and their musical direction. “We brought together producers with strong musical strengths, so we’re proud of the completeness, charm, and individuality of the songs,” Choi said. “All four teams have different personalities, but within the big framework of SMTM12, they harmonize. There’s a real thrill when you listen to all their songs together.”
The producers themselves are deeply invested in both the program and the genre. “When we have meetings or meet with the producers, we talk a lot about the current state of hip-hop,” Choi shared. “You can feel their sincerity. They give a lot of feedback about how the SMTM series is connected to hip-hop and where it should go.” Each team brings something unique: Zico & Crush are detail-oriented, drawing on extensive stage experience; Gray & Loco are known for their warmth and mainstream appeal; Jay Park & Lil Moshpit exude style and a shared vision for hip-hop’s ‘cool factor’; and J-Tong & Huhki, newcomers to the series, offer raw, edgy, yet accessible hip-hop.
MC Kim Jin-pyo, a fixture since season 3, returns for his tenth outing as host. Choi expressed gratitude for Kim’s enduring presence: “When I offered him the MC role, he was really happy, and it moved me. I think Kim Jin-pyo and SMTM share a heritage together.” There’s even talk among fans about a special stage appearance by Kim, though he’s been reluctant, joking, “If I do it, I’ll get criticized.”
Despite the show’s long run, Choi remains acutely aware of the need for both tradition and innovation. “I think the reason the program has lasted so long is because of the unique, unpredictable characters that appear,” Choi reflected. “I hope viewers see this season as an annual event that’s returned and enjoy the remaining episodes.”
With its record-breaking applicant pool, innovative dual-track format, and a cast of passionate producers and contestants, SMTM12 stands as a testament to the vitality of Korean hip-hop and the enduring power of reinvention. As the season barrels toward its finale, all eyes are on who will seize the moment—and what new stories will be written in the annals of this iconic show.
