The Steel City derby is once again set to ignite the passions of Sheffield, as Sheffield United prepare to host their city rivals, Sheffield Wednesday, at Bramall Lane on Monday, February 23, 2026 (NZT). The stakes are sky-high, with United eager to build on recent momentum and Wednesday desperately fighting for Championship survival amid a season of turmoil.

All eyes are on United's new midfield anchor, Kalvin Phillips, whose surprise January loan move from Manchester City has brought fresh hope to the Blades' campaign. Phillips, once England's Men's Player of the Year in 2021, has seen his career stall at the Etihad due to injuries and limited opportunities. Now, at 30, he’s determined to carve out a new chapter in South Yorkshire. "I want to play as many games as possible," Phillips told Sky Sports in an exclusive interview. "If I'd gone to a Premier League team, it might have taken longer to get into the team, and they have fewer games. I'd rather be put in the deep end than work my way in."

Thrown straight into the action, Phillips made his first start for United in a gritty 1-0 win at Portsmouth last weekend. The midfielder admitted the return to regular football was a shock to the system. "In the first half, my lungs were gone. I was very stiff for the next three days," he confessed. Despite the physical toll, Phillips relished the opportunity, crediting manager Chris Wilder for his support. "Chris has been really good with me, asking how I'm feeling and making sure that if there's anything body-wise or uncomfortable, he's there to ask the questions. I've really enjoyed it since I've been here."

Sheffield United, currently 15th in the Championship table, are looking to climb higher and perhaps even mount a late push for the playoffs. Phillips is optimistic about the squad’s potential, especially with the Steel City derby looming. "With the squad we've got, it's 100 per cent achievable," he said regarding the prospect of promotion. "We didn't have the greatest start, but we've had a decent run recently. The win at the weekend was big because we didn't necessarily play our best football, but we dug deep and got three points. We've got the Steel City derby this weekend, which will be tough and exciting, then Coventry and QPR. The Championship can go either way. If we focus on Sunday's game, which is a massive one for us, and get the preparation right, that can set us up well."

United’s defensive line will be bolstered by the presence of Tyler Bindon, the 20-year-old All Whites defender on loan from Nottingham Forest. Bindon has overcome a challenging start to his United tenure, having been left out of the starting lineup for 11 straight matches before regaining his spot in December. Since then, he’s become a regular under Chris Wilder. "Everyone in the squad is really looking forward to it," Bindon said ahead of the derby. "It’ll be awesome to play them at home in front of everyone. So hopefully we can get three points and send them on their way."

Bindon’s journey has been one of resilience and gratitude. "I'm enjoying it, I think the fans have been great. Everyone around me has been very supportive in helping me come into the team," he reflected. "I'm very grateful to all of them and the coaching staff behind the scenes who continue to work with me and help me grow as a person and a player. I think it helps that everyone knows the place and is working hard together as a team to keep going. I think everyone’s on the same page and ready to put a shift in when needed."

For Sheffield Wednesday, the situation is dire. Rooted to the bottom of the table with -7 points, the Owls have been docked 18 points for severe financial mismanagement and insolvency, leaving them 35 points adrift of safety. Their last win in the Championship came way back in September 2025 against Portsmouth, and since then, Wednesday have endured a 26-game winless streak. To make matters worse, they only managed to score their first goal in 11 matches last weekend. The pressure is immense, and the prospect of relegation to League One looms large.

The context of the derby couldn't be more dramatic. Sheffield Wednesday, once a proud mainstay of English football, are now fighting for their very existence in the second tier. United, meanwhile, are seeking to capitalize on their rivals’ woes and use the derby as a springboard for a late-season surge up the table. The reverse fixture in November saw United claim a comfortable 3-0 victory, with Bindon watching from the bench as an unused substitute. This time, both he and Phillips are set to play pivotal roles.

Phillips’ move to Bramall Lane was influenced by his former Leeds teammate Patrick Bamford, who reached out on behalf of Chris Wilder. "Funnily enough, it was early December when I was thinking about going out on loan. Pat texted me and said Chris is asking him to message me to see what I thought about coming here to play a few games. At first, I wasn't sure, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought why not? I spoke to Pat and, to be honest, I barely spoke to Chris. I just made my mind up, spoke to my agent and said I'd rather go to Sheffield United than anywhere else. I've always admired the way Chris manages and the stories I've heard about him. It just felt like the perfect fit."

Despite his struggles at Manchester City, where he made just a single seven-minute appearance this season in the Carabao Cup, Phillips is determined to get back to his best. "I'm a person who works hard and never gives up on what I believe I can do," he said. "I just need to play football to get back to my former self. Once I get up and firing, I'll feel a lot better and a lot more confident. Any player in my situation would say not playing has been the major reason for a dip. So many players have stayed at clubs for so long without playing, and their careers have fizzled out. I didn't want that to happen. I still feel like I've got life in me and a lot of football to play. I'm looking forward to the next three or four years."

As the city of Sheffield braces for another fierce derby, both teams are acutely aware of what’s at stake. For United, it’s a chance to push up the table and keep their playoff dreams alive. For Wednesday, it’s one last desperate bid to halt their slide and restore pride. The action kicks off at Bramall Lane, and with so much riding on the result, this Steel City derby promises to deliver fireworks and fierce competition.

With passionate players like Phillips and Bindon in the spotlight, and both teams hungry for points, Sheffield is set for a football spectacle that will have fans on the edge of their seats. The Steel City rivalry, rich in history and drama, is alive and kicking—and this time, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
