Samson Century And Overton Heroics Lift CSK Over Delhi Capitals

Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 115 and Jamie Overton’s four-wicket haul power Chennai Super Kings to their first IPL 2026 win, ending a six-game home drought with a 23-run victory over Delhi Capitals.

The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai was awash with anticipation and a sea of yellow as the Chennai Super Kings finally broke their winless streak, defeating the Delhi Capitals by 23 runs in a high-octane IPL 2026 clash on April 11. The victory, powered by a scintillating century from Sanju Samson and a clinical bowling display from Jamie Overton, marked CSK’s first win of the season and their first triumph at home after six successive losses stretching back to the previous campaign.

Coming into Match 18, the Super Kings were under immense pressure. Having lost their opening three games, questions swirled around their misfiring batting order and inconsistent bowling. The Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, arrived in Chennai sitting comfortably in fourth place with two wins from three matches, brimming with confidence after ending their own Chepauk hoodoo last year. The stage was set for a gripping contest, and the players did not disappoint.

CSK’s captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and, in line with expectations given the high humidity and threat of dew, opted to bat first on a pitch that had shed its reputation for being slow and spin-friendly. Instead, the surface promised runs, and it was Sanju Samson who seized the moment with a masterclass in T20 batting.

Samson, opening the innings, wasted no time asserting himself. He scythed the second ball he faced for four, setting the tone for a powerplay blitz that left the 32,000-strong Chepauk crowd whistling in delight. By the end of the first six overs, Samson had already raced to 45 off just 19 balls, peppering the boundary with nine fours. In contrast, Gaikwad struggled to get going, managing just a solitary boundary in his 18-ball stay before falling for 15 to an Axar Patel delivery that cramped him for room.

With the captain gone, the onus was on Samson and the young Ayush Mhatre to build on the strong start. Mhatre, undaunted by the occasion, played with composure and flair, raising his fifty off 27 balls. However, after a brief lull—scoring only eight runs off his last nine balls—he was retired out for 59, making way for Shivam Dube to inject fresh impetus into the innings.

Samson, meanwhile, was in imperious form. He brought up his half-century off 26 balls, much to the delight of the home fans, and then accelerated further. The hallmark of his innings was his ability to find gaps and clear the ropes with ease. Lungi Ngidi, a former CSK player now donning DC colors, was on the receiving end of some audacious strokeplay. When Ngidi tried his trademark slower ball, Samson picked it early and dispatched it past sweeper cover. The first six of the innings came in the 11th over, a towering hit off T Natarajan. In all, Samson took the left-arm seamer for 33 runs off 13 balls, including the edged four that brought up his century in the 18th over.

It was a knock for the ages—Samson’s fourth IPL hundred, putting him behind only Virat Kohli, Jos Buttler, Chris Gayle, and KL Rahul for most centuries in the league. His unbeaten 115 off 56 balls, studded with 15 fours and four sixes, propelled CSK to a formidable 212 for 2 in their 20 overs. Dube’s cameo and Mhatre’s earlier fireworks ensured the Super Kings posted a total that seemed above par, even on a pitch favoring batters.

Delhi Capitals’ chase began with a bang. Openers Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul blazed past fifty in just the fourth over, punishing Akeal Hosein, who struggled with his line and bowled two front-foot no-balls in his opening over. Nissanka, in particular, looked dangerous, lining up Khaleel Ahmed for boundaries and sixes. Rahul, however, was undone by a short ball from Khaleel, departing for 18 off 10 balls. Still, DC had 61 on the board after just five overs, and the chase looked well and truly on.

But cricket is a game of momentum swings. CSK struck thrice in the next three overs, with Anshul Kamboj and debutant Gurjapneet Singh making crucial breakthroughs. Kamboj had Nissanka caught at mid-on by Dewald Brevis for 41, while Singh removed Axar Patel with his very first ball in the IPL, thanks to a spectacular catch from Sarfaraz Khan at point. Overton then joined the party, dismissing Sameer Rizvi for just 6, and suddenly the Capitals’ chase was wobbling.

Tristan Stubbs, however, refused to throw in the towel. The South African batter mounted a spirited fightback, compiling 60 off 38 balls and threatening to take the game deep. With the required run rate climbing, Stubbs tried to up the ante but Overton, bowling with pace and precision, had him caught at mid-off in the penultimate over. Overton’s final figures—4 wickets for 18 runs in four overs—were a testament to his control and match awareness. Kamboj finished with 3 for 35, and the Super Kings’ bowlers collectively held their nerve in the face of a late onslaught.

Delhi Capitals could only muster 189 in their 20 overs, falling 23 runs short. The defeat marked their second consecutive loss, while for CSK, the win was a much-needed shot in the arm. The relief and joy were palpable as the players celebrated with the fans, who had waited so long to see their team prevail at home.

"We needed this win badly, and I’m just happy I could contribute," said Sanju Samson after being named Player of the Match. His innings not only reignited CSK’s campaign but also vaulted him into the top ten of the Orange Cap leaderboard—no small feat in a season brimming with batting talent.

For the Super Kings, the victory could prove to be a turning point. With two more home games on the horizon, the momentum from this win may well set the tone for the rest of their season. As for the Capitals, they’ll be left to ponder missed opportunities and dropped catches—most notably Nissanka’s spill when Samson was on 52—that might have changed the course of the match.

Cricket fans can look forward to more fireworks as the IPL 2026 season gathers pace. But for now, the Chepauk faithful can savor a night when their heroes finally delivered, and the famous yellow jerseys shone brightest under the Chennai lights.
