Sai Sudharsan Breaks IPL Record With Blazing Century

Gujarat Titans opener makes history with fastest 2,000 IPL runs and becomes first Indian to score centuries in three straight seasons during dominant stand against RCB.

Sai Sudharsan delivered a masterclass at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 24, 2026, as he powered Gujarat Titans to a formidable total and etched his name in Indian Premier League history. The 23-year-old opener not only smashed a breathtaking century against Royal Challengers Bengaluru but also broke Chris Gayle’s long-standing record by becoming the fastest batter to reach 2,000 IPL runs—doing so in just 47 innings. It was a night of milestones, partnerships, and pure cricketing artistry that left fans and pundits alike buzzing with excitement.

The stage was set for a high-octane clash as RCB skipper Rajat Patidar won the toss and opted to bowl first. The home side made a notable change, handing England’s Jacob Bethell his season debut in place of the injured Phil Salt. On the other side, Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, introduced West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder for his debut and brought Manav Suthar back into the XI. But all eyes were fixed on the Titans’ opening duo, who have quietly established themselves among the league’s most reliable partnerships.

From the very first ball, Sudharsan and Gill looked composed and focused, with pads strapped and gloves on, ready to take on the challenge. What followed was anything but quiet. The pair put together a commanding 128-run opening stand—the highest for Gujarat Titans against RCB for any wicket. Gill played the perfect foil, rotating the strike and allowing Sudharsan to dictate terms. He contributed a patient 32 off 24 balls, including two fours and a six, before falling to Suyash Sharma. Jos Buttler, coming in next, added a brisk 25 off 16 deliveries to keep the momentum alive.

But it was Sudharsan who stole the show. Coming into the match with only 135 runs from his first six innings of the season and just one half-century, the left-hander was due for a big score. And what a way to bounce back! Facing the majority of deliveries in the powerplay, Sudharsan was batting on 85 off 49 balls at the end of nine overs, already having struck nine fours and four sixes. He looked in complete control, showing no signs of pressure even against top bowlers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood.

Sudharsan eventually brought up his third IPL century off just 57 balls—a knock laced with 11 fours and five sixes, boasting a strike rate of 172.41. With this, he became the first Indian to score centuries in three consecutive IPL seasons, joining an elusive club led by Chris Gayle, who achieved the feat from 2011 to 2013. According to NDTV, "It was always coming. I was touching the ball well in the last few innings and really grateful to God. Really happy to contribute to the team. I think with the level of communication we understood it was two-paced and sticky and it was a natural instinct to take the game deeper. [On his fist-pump celebration] I have such high standards for myself I want to always put my team in a good position. I've been starting well but not finishing well so it was more than just a century for me. I didn't try to take too much control of the innings and let go. I let it go really well today. I personally feel it is a really good score for the bowlers. Not so easy to play shots as it's not so true," Sudharsan said at the innings break.

His ton was more than just a personal milestone—it was a statement of intent, a reminder of his class and composure. Sudharsan’s approach was measured and mature, relying on timing and placement rather than brute force. He consistently found gaps, kept the scoreboard ticking, and rarely took undue risks. This ability to mix solid defense with calculated aggression is what sets him apart and has made him a fan favorite since his debut.

With this knock, Sudharsan also became the 14th batter to score an IPL hundred against RCB and only the second Gujarat Titans player to do so, after Shubman Gill’s century in IPL 2023. RCB, meanwhile, continued their unwanted record of conceding the most individual centuries in IPL history—now at 15, ahead of Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, each with 14. The partnership between Sudharsan and Gill is fast becoming one of the most prolific in IPL history, now boasting eight century stands, trailing only the legendary pairs of Virat Kohli & AB de Villiers (10) and Kohli & Chris Gayle (9).

Statistically, Sudharsan’s achievement is monumental. Before this game, he had racked up 1,928 runs in 46 matches at an average of 45.90 and a strike rate of 145.83, including two centuries and 13 fifties. By crossing 2,000 runs in just 47 innings, he surpassed Chris Gayle’s previous record of 48 innings—a mark that had stood for over a decade. He also joined an elite group of Indian players who reached the milestone in the fewest balls faced, alongside Abhishek Sharma, Virender Sehwag, and Rishabh Pant, underscoring his efficiency and consistency at the top of the order.

Social media erupted in praise for Sudharsan’s performance. Cricketer Shreevats Goswami tweeted, “Just watching Sai Sudharsan bat over the years more so for GT, you get the feeling he might be viewed in the wrong format for India. Looks every bit a white-ball player in fact tailor-made for ODIs. No? Top 💯 tonight.” Fans lauded his calmness under pressure, his classic technique, and his ability to deliver when it matters most. As one user put it, "Pure class, calm under pressure, and a hundred to remember against RCB. This is special."

Despite Sudharsan’s heroics, RCB managed to slow down the scoring in the final overs. A late injury to Rasikh Salam forced them to turn to Krunal Pandya for the last over, but Jason Holder seized the moment, smashing a couple of sixes and a four to push the Titans’ total past 200. Gujarat Titans eventually finished with a commanding 205/3 in their 20 overs—a score that put RCB under immense pressure as they began their chase.

At just 23, Sudharsan’s maturity and poise are remarkable. His ability to anchor the innings, adapt to different conditions, and accelerate when needed makes him one of the most complete batters in the league. This season, his performances have been a major reason why Gujarat Titans remain strong contenders as the playoff race heats up. Every run and every win counts at this stage, and Sudharsan’s record-breaking feat could not have come at a better time for his team.

As the IPL 2026 season barrels towards its climax, Sai Sudharsan’s historic night at the Chinnaswamy is sure to be remembered as a turning point—not just for the Gujarat Titans, but for the league itself. With records tumbling and new benchmarks set, Sudharsan’s star continues to rise, and cricket fans everywhere will be watching eagerly to see what he does next.
