Philadelphia And St Louis Lead 2026 James Beard Finalists

From Philadelphia’s record nominations to St. Louis’s culinary resurgence, this year’s James Beard Award finalists showcase a diverse and vibrant American dining scene.

The culinary world is buzzing with excitement as the James Beard Foundation revealed its 2026 Restaurant and Chef Awards finalists on March 31, highlighting a year of remarkable achievements and fierce regional competition. Often called "the Oscars of the food world," these awards have long set the bar for culinary excellence across the United States, and this year’s list is a testament to the growing diversity and innovation in American dining.

Philadelphia, in particular, has emerged as a major force. The city, which entered the semifinalist round with 13 nominees (14 if you count neighboring Lancaster), now boasts eight finalists—a record that’s turning heads nationwide. Kalaya, the acclaimed Thai restaurant led by chef Chutatip "Nok" Suntaranon, is up for Outstanding Restaurant. Suntaranon, who won Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic in 2023, has seen Kalaya evolve from a local favorite to a nationally recognized destination, earning a Michelin recommendation just last year. As Philly Mag notes, "She’ll be up against Catbird Seat in Nashville, the Four Horsemen in Brooklyn, Mixtli in San Antonio, and Vicia in St. Louis, and considering the run Kalaya has been on lately, I think it has an honest shot at bringing home a win."

Emmett, a new addition to Kensington’s vibrant food scene, is a finalist for Best New Restaurant. Opened just over a year ago by chef Evan Snyder, Emmett has quickly gained acclaim for its innovative prix fixe menu featuring dishes like wagyu and horseradish rye tartlets, lamb kibbeh, and chestnut-dusted agnolotti. The restaurant was also featured on Esquire’s 2025 Best New Restaurant list, further cementing its reputation as a must-visit spot. As the Billy Penn newsletter puts it, "If you had to define where Philly is at right now with one single nominee, this would be my pick."

The city’s pastry scene is also in the spotlight, with Justine MacNeil of Fiore earning a nomination for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker. MacNeil’s Southern Italian baking at Fiore has drawn praise for its creativity and consistency. Meanwhile, Lovers Bar at Friday Saturday Sunday in Rittenhouse is a finalist for Outstanding Bar, a nod that surprised no one familiar with its reputation for inventive cocktails and welcoming atmosphere.

Philly’s dominance continues in the Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic category, with four out of five finalists hailing from the region. Jesse Ito of Royal Sushi & Izakaya, Amanda Shulman of Her Place Supper Club, and the duo Omar Tate and Cybille St. Aude-Tate of Honeysuckle are joined by Nathan Flaim of Lancaster’s Luca. According to Philly Mag, "If I was a gambling man, I would put my money on Tate and St. Aude-Tate this year because the work they’ve been doing at Honeysuckle has been just phenomenal, and their version of edible storytelling is so personal." The only other non-Pennsylvania nominee in this category is Suresh Sundas of Tapori in Washington D.C., whose restaurant is known for its "Indian-ish street foods and cocktails," as WTOP describes.

The Mid-Atlantic region isn’t the only area celebrating. In the Southeast, Joe Cash, chef and owner of Scoundrel in Greenville, South Carolina, is a finalist for Best Chef: Southeast. Scoundrel, which opened in 2022 and received a Michelin star in 2025, is a French-inspired restaurant that has helped put Greenville on the national culinary map. South Carolina also secured nominations for Merci in Charleston (Best New Restaurant) and Weltons Tiny Bakeshop (Outstanding Bakery), demonstrating the state’s growing prominence in the culinary world. As The Greenville News highlights, "The James Beard Awards were established in 1990," and the state has enjoyed recent success, with Rioin Oshiro winning a Media Award in 2024 and Wade’s Restaurant earning an American Classics Award the same year.

Washington D.C. is making its presence felt as well. Maison Bar à Vins, a French-inspired wine bar and restaurant in Adams Morgan that opened in September 2025, is a finalist for Best New Restaurant. Brent Kroll of Maxwell Park is recognized for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service, and Susan Bae of Moon Rabbit is up for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker. Meherwan Irani and Molly Irani of the Chai Pani Restaurant Group, which opened an outpost in Union Market last August, are finalists for Outstanding Restaurateur, further showcasing D.C.’s dynamic food scene. Field & Main Restaurant in Marshall, Virginia, rounds out the region’s accolades with a nomination for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program.

St. Louis is also celebrating a banner year. Five chefs and restaurateurs from the city are finalists: Loryn Nalic of Balkan Treat Box and Nick Bognar of Sado and Pavilion for Best Chef: Midwest; Robin for Best New Restaurant; Louie for Outstanding Hospitality; and Vicia for Outstanding Restaurant. The city’s food community is understandably thrilled. As Loryn Nalic told St. Louis Magazine, "You feel so much gratitude. We all work so hard, and it’s never not shocking, because there are so many talented and amazing human beings out there doing this work. To be somebody that is recognized for their work is overwhelming." St. Louis hasn’t seen a local chef win since 2017, when Kevin Nashan of Sidney Street Café took home the honors, so expectations are running high.

The awards ceremony, set for June 15, 2026, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, will be the culmination of months of anticipation and speculation. For many chefs and restaurateurs, simply being named a finalist is a career-defining moment. As the James Beard Foundation itself notes, the awards "are considered one of the top acknowledgments in the restaurant industry," and the list of nominees this year reflects both established powerhouses and rising stars.

With cities like Philadelphia, St. Louis, Washington D.C., Charleston, and Greenville all making strong showings, the 2026 James Beard Awards are shaping up to be one of the most competitive—and exciting—in recent memory. The only certainty is that American diners will have plenty of reasons to celebrate, no matter which names are called on June 15.
