Partial Lunar Eclipse Dazzles Americas With Fiery Display

Nearly all of the moon will be covered during the August 2026 partial lunar eclipse, offering skywatchers across North and South America a rare and colorful nighttime spectacle.

Even the West Coast and Alaska will catch at least a partial view, though in some western locales, the moon will rise with the eclipse already underway. Hawaii, meanwhile, will see the moon rising already deep in shadow, missing the earliest stages but still catching much of the show.

Don’t worry about gear or safety precautions. Unlike solar eclipses—which require special glasses to protect your eyes—lunar eclipses are completely safe to view with the naked eye. A dark, curved edge will slowly eat its way across the lunar surface, covering more and more until, at maximum eclipse, only a slim crescent remains in direct sunlight. The rest of the moon will glow in shades of copper, rust, burnt orange, or even deep red—colors produced by sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere and being bent toward the moon. This phenomenon, known as Rayleigh scattering, is the same reason sunsets and sunrises often appear red or orange. Technically, this isn’t a “blood moon”—a term reserved for total lunar eclipses when the entire moon is engulfed in Earth’s shadow. At maximum, about 96.2% of the moon’s visible disk will be inside the umbra, leaving only a narrow bright edge while the rest glows in those signature reddish hues.
