Nine Injured In Cincinnati Music Venue Shooting

A birthday party at Riverfront Live turns chaotic as gunfire leaves nine wounded and raises questions about venue security.

In the early hours of March 1, 2026, the city of Cincinnati was shaken by a mass shooting at a popular music venue on its east side. At least nine people were injured when gunfire erupted inside Riverfront Live, a club located at 4343 Kellogg Avenue, leaving a heavy police presence and a community searching for answers.

The events unfolded just before 1 a.m., as Riverfront Live was hosting a birthday party that had started at 10 p.m. the previous night. According to WXIX, security camera footage from a nearby business captured the chaotic scene as a crowd of partygoers sprinted out of the venue after the first shots rang out inside. The panic was palpable, with people ducking for cover and fleeing toward safety in the darkness.

Police responded swiftly to the incident, cordoning off the area and tending to the wounded. By 3:30 a.m., Cincinnati police reassured the public that the shooting was an isolated event and there was no ongoing threat. Still, the investigation remained active, and authorities had not released any suspect descriptions as of Sunday morning. "This investigation is still ongoing," Cincinnati police emphasized, underscoring the uncertainty and tension that lingered in the aftermath.

The victims, nine in total, were all expected to recover, according to statements from law enforcement. Their injuries varied in severity, but the quick response from emergency services and the proximity of hospitals provided some measure of relief. Among those injured was a 35-year-old man who was shot four times. His mother, Antoinette Coates, expressed both gratitude for her son’s survival and frustration at what she perceived as lapses in venue security. "If you’re going to be having these parties, protect your people," Coates told WXIX. "Evidently, they’re letting people in without searching them, and they’re letting guns in, or they’re letting people bring guns, but I could have lost my son because somebody is being too cheap or too careless."

Others echoed her concerns. Angel Potts, whose 25-year-old daughter was also among the injured, recounted the harrowing moments when gunfire broke out. "She was leaving the bathroom and there was a few people in front of her and that’s when they started hearing the gunshots," Potts recalled. "And then she said they just dropped down and some of them went running and she went running towards the door and went out of the door and jumped the fence and went across to a United Dairy Farmer." Potts noted that her daughter, like many patrons, believed the venue’s security measures would keep her safe. "They charge them $60 or $50 to get into this establishment and then they’re not safe," she said, adding, "And then they’re letting people in that are not good people or have firearms on them when they were frisked on through the door. She said they patted her down, so she thought she would be safe."

Potts described her daughter as "very distraught, anxiety is up at the emergency room. She’s being checked out and it’s not good. She’s a little banged up." The emotional toll on families and victims was evident, as was the growing scrutiny over how weapons managed to make their way inside the event.

While the motive behind the attack remained unclear, a witness who asked to remain anonymous provided a chilling account of the moments leading up to the shooting. The man told WXIX he saw a person on the floor involved in an altercation with four to five others before that individual was "knocked unconscious." Not long after, he said, "three dudes came from the back and shoot the club up and ran out the way they came in." Police have not confirmed whether this altercation was directly connected to the shooting or to the birthday party, leaving more questions than answers for those involved.

Riverfront Live, the site of the tragedy, is a well-known concert venue in Cincinnati’s East End, near the intersection of Kellogg and Wilmer Avenues. According to its website, the venue enforces a 16-and-older age restriction unless otherwise stated, and can accommodate up to 1,200 guests indoors and 3,500 outdoors. On this particular evening, the club was reportedly full of partygoers celebrating a birthday—a night that should have been filled with music and laughter instead turned into one of fear and chaos.

As of 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Riverfront Live had not released an official statement regarding the shooting. The silence from the venue only fueled speculation and concern among community members, some of whom questioned whether enough was being done to ensure the safety of patrons at such events. The incident reignited debates over security protocols at entertainment venues, particularly regarding screenings for weapons and the adequacy of staff training in handling emergencies.

For many Cincinnati residents, the shooting at Riverfront Live was a grim reminder of the persistent threat of gun violence in public spaces. While mass shootings have unfortunately become all too common across the United States, each incident leaves its own mark on the community—upending lives, sparking outrage, and prompting calls for change. The fact that all nine victims are expected to recover offers some solace, but it does little to ease the trauma experienced by those present or the loved ones anxiously waiting for updates from hospital waiting rooms.

As the investigation continues, police have urged anyone with information or footage of the incident to come forward. The lack of a suspect description has complicated efforts to bring those responsible to justice, and authorities are no doubt combing through security footage, witness statements, and other evidence in hopes of piecing together the full story of what happened that night.

Meanwhile, the families of the victims are left grappling with the aftermath—some expressing anger at perceived failures in security, others simply thankful that their loved ones survived. The city, too, must reckon with the reality that even celebrations meant to bring people together can be marred by violence if proper precautions are not taken.

As Cincinnati looks ahead, the shooting at Riverfront Live stands as both a cautionary tale and a call to action. Whether it will lead to meaningful changes in how venues approach security remains to be seen, but for now, the community is united in its hope for healing and justice.
