Nexon And Krafton Set Sales Records As Korean Gaming Booms

Major game studios post blockbuster earnings while new releases, community events, and creative contests drive a wave of innovation across South Korea’s gaming industry.

In a remarkable turn for South Korea’s gaming industry, major players Nexon, Krafton, and Pearl Abyss are all poised for record-breaking first-quarter results in 2026, while a flurry of new content, community events, and innovation continues to energize the sector. According to News1, both Nexon and Krafton are forecast to join the coveted '1 trillion won sales club' in Q1 2026, cementing their dominance in a fiercely competitive market and signaling a fresh era of growth and creativity.

Krafton, renowned for its mega-hit PUBG: Battlegrounds, is expected to post consolidated sales of 1.2058 trillion won for the quarter, a robust 37.93% jump from the previous year, even as operating profit is projected to dip by 10.38% to 409.8 billion won. The company, set to unveil its official results on April 30, is not resting on its laurels. As reported by News1, Krafton currently has 26 new projects in the pipeline and plans to launch a staggering 12 new titles in the next two years. This ambitious roadmap was reinforced by CEO Kim Chang-han’s reappointment for a third term in March, who stated his intent to "reduce reliance on Battlegrounds and transform Krafton into a franchise powerhouse built on new intellectual properties."

Nexon, another industry titan, is also on track to surpass the trillion-won milestone. Its Q1 2026 sales are forecast to fall between 1.3973 trillion and 1.5229 trillion won, with operating profits projected between 475.2 billion and 567.5 billion won. The company’s recent blockbuster, Arc Raiders, released in October 2025, has been a global sensation—surpassing 14 million cumulative sales by April 2026 and clinching awards at five major international ceremonies, including The Game Awards. However, the ride hasn’t been entirely smooth. Nexon faced a significant challenge when a probability error was discovered in MapleStory by January 28, 2026, leading to a massive refund of about 130 billion won to affected players. Despite this setback, Nexon's ability to weather the storm and maintain its growth trajectory speaks volumes about its resilience and commitment to its community.

Meanwhile, Pearl Abyss is enjoying a renaissance of its own. The studio’s much-anticipated open-world title Crimson Desert, which took nearly seven years to develop, has finally hit its stride. By April 15—just 26 days after launch—it had already sold 5 million copies, propelling the company to an expected Q1 sales figure of 291.6 billion won, a staggering 248% increase over the previous year, and a return to profitability with an operating profit of 125 billion won. DS Investment & Securities researcher Choi Seung-ho called Crimson Desert “the most successful release by a listed Korean game company since PUBG: Battlegrounds,” predicting sustained strong sales in the months ahead.

Other major game companies have seen mixed results. NCSoft is projected to record 518.1 billion won in sales and 93 billion won in operating profit, while Netmarble is forecast to hit 692.1 billion won in sales and 72.5 billion won in profit. Kakao Games, however, faces headwinds, with sales expected at 97.8 billion won and an operating loss of 16 billion won.

Beyond the headline financials, the industry is buzzing with new initiatives and community engagement. On April 27, Nexon announced the launch of 'Mecaton,' a hackathon leveraging the MapleStory IP. Targeted at adults aged 19 and above, the event is designed to expand the creative universe of MapleStory and uncover fresh game concepts. Up to 160 participants will be selected to receive team-building support, technical training on the MapleStory World platform, and mentoring from industry experts. The hackathon boasts a total prize pool of 20 million won, with top entries eligible for further exposure in the upcoming MapleStory Global Development Contest. Applications are open until May 11, 2026.

Netmarble, meanwhile, wrapped up its global Solo Leveling: Arise Championship 2026 at Seoul’s DN Coliseum on April 25, bringing together finalists from Europe, South America, North America, and Asia. The tournament, which crowned 'NightFall' from the Twilight guild as champion, was as much a celebration as a competition, offering immersive experiences and hands-on events for fans. The company also announced a sweeping second-anniversary update, the 'Evolution Showcase,' which promises faster leveling, streamlined content, new classes, and up to 500 free draws for all users. According to Netmarble’s Jin Sung-geon, "This evolution update will take Solo Leveling: Arise to a completely different dimension."

Smilegate also made waves by updating its mobile RPG Epic Seven with a new episode, 'Requiem of the End,' and introducing a unique Moonlight hero, Salome, who can copy enemy abilities for a turn. The update brings enhanced storytelling, new gameplay mechanics, and system improvements, including increased hero intimacy levels and a more user-friendly equipment upgrade system.

NCSoft, not to be outdone, hosted its first-ever offline event for Lineage Classic at a retro-themed PC café in Seoul from April 25 to 26. The event drew 840 enthusiastic participants, who enjoyed themed raids, competitions, and exclusive rewards. NCSoft’s Chief Business Officer Lee Sung-gu remarked, "We organized this event to share memories and fun with our loyal Lineage Classic players, and we’re committed to delivering more content and offline experiences in the future."

Pearl Abyss also responded to fan demand by releasing the first official OST album for Crimson Desert as a free Steam DLC on April 27. The album features 75 tracks across four themes—'Themes,' 'Battles,' 'Exploration,' and 'Bosses'—and is available in high-quality formats. Audio director Ryu Hwi-man explained, "We decided to provide high-quality audio for free after receiving requests from users worldwide who wanted to own the OST since the game’s launch. We hope players can relive the thrill of Pywell through this music."

Finally, Mgame has breathed new life into Yulgang Online with the addition of a new job, 'Jinpungbaek,' and the opening of a brand-new server on April 29. Accompanying events, running through June 3, reward players with growth-boosting items and special incentives for leveling up, marking the first new server launch since 2020. Mgame’s business director Kang Young-soon noted, "We’ve prepared content and events that stay true to the original’s identity, and this update is just the beginning of more new content to come."

With blockbuster sales, inventive events, and a steady stream of updates, South Korea’s game industry continues to evolve at breakneck speed. The coming months promise even more innovation, competition, and community engagement as these companies vie for the hearts—and wallets—of players at home and abroad.
