NetJets Private Jet Crash In Texas Leaves One Dead

A NetJets-operated business jet crashed onto a Laredo highway, killing one and sparking dramatic rescue efforts as investigators search for answers.

Late Tuesday night, a routine business flight turned into a scene of chaos and heroism on a Texas highway, as a NetJets-operated Cessna Citation Latitude crashed and burst into flames near the Texas-Mexico border. The crash, which occurred just before 10 p.m. on June 16, 2026, along Laredo’s Loop 20, left one person dead and five others hospitalized, sending shockwaves through the aviation community and the city of Laredo alike. The incident marks the first fatal accident for NetJets, Berkshire Hathaway’s private jet unit, in its decades-long history, according to Aviation International News.

The ill-fated aircraft, registered N523QS, had departed Los Cabos International Airport in Baja California, Mexico, at 6:19 p.m. local time, bound for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. According to flight tracking data from FlightAware, the jet had already completed three flights earlier that day, starting in Denver, then Scottsdale, and Ensenada, before arriving in Los Cabos. Shortly after departing for Austin, the crew reported mechanical problems and low fuel, prompting an emergency diversion to Laredo International Airport. Tragically, the plane never made it to the runway.

Dashcam footage and eyewitness videos captured the dramatic final moments as the twin-engine jet careened down the highway, striking a light post and slamming into a barrier just south of Laredo International Airport. The impact nearly split the fuselage in two, with the tail ripped from the body and the nose section left lying sideways, flames and thick smoke billowing into the night sky. The Associated Press reported that the aircraft came to rest not far from the airport, its wreckage a grim testament to the violence of the crash.

Chaos erupted on Loop 20 as passing motorists and local residents rushed from their vehicles toward the burning wreckage. Zayra Garza, a local motorist, captured video of the desperate rescue efforts: civilians wielding sledgehammers and shovels smashed at the cockpit glass while others pried open the main door. Inside the cabin, passengers were seen frantically trying to break windows to escape the encroaching flames. With help from police officers and bystanders, three passengers and a pilot managed to rush out, while a crew member and a firefighter used a ladder to pull out the remaining survivors. In total, five of the six people on board were rescued and taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Laredo Police Department Investigator Joe Baeza confirmed the fatality, stating during a press conference, "Regrettably and tragically, we do have to report that there is one decedent involved in this crash." Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin. Baeza also noted that one vehicle traveling southbound on Loop 20 was struck by part of the aircraft, though no injuries were reported among motorists.

The rescue operation was not without cost to first responders. Five police officers who rushed into the burning wreckage to assist with the evacuation were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, as reported by multiple outlets including Fox News and local Laredo sources. Their actions, along with those of the bystanders, were widely praised for saving lives amid the chaos.

Mayor Victor Treviño of Laredo offered his condolences in a public statement: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones affected by the recent private jet crash." He urged patience as authorities investigate, emphasizing, "It is important that we avoid speculation while the facts are being gathered." NetJets, the operator of the aircraft, echoed this sentiment, stating, "We have received reports of injuries and a fatality related to the accident and are working with local law enforcement to confirm details. Our immediate concern is for the well-being of our Crewmembers, our passengers, and their families during this time." The company has activated its crisis response and family support teams and is fully cooperating with investigators.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has assumed control of the investigation, with assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the FBI, who were both on site. According to attorney Robert Clifford, a veteran aviation plaintiffs’ lawyer who has represented victims in numerous air disasters, "The NTSB certainly will examine the maintenance records of this aircraft, cockpit communications prior to the crash, flight data, pilot actions, and all aircraft systems to determine what is the probable cause of this crash. If it is a mechanical failure, maintenance deficiency or design defect that contributed to this tragedy, those who are responsible all must be held accountable. These families deserve answers." Clifford’s remarks highlight the complexity of aviation accident investigations, which can take months or even years before definitive conclusions are reached.

Airport officials and flight data suggest that mechanical failure was a likely factor in the crash. Laredo International Airport Director Gilberto Sanchez told local station KGNS-TV that the aircraft had experienced a mechanical issue prior to impact, and media reports consistently cite low fuel as a compounding problem. The Citation Latitude, a midsize business jet manufactured by Textron’s Cessna subsidiary, is a workhorse of the NetJets fleet, which boasts more than 250 of these jets among its 1,400 daily flights. The aircraft typically seats seven passengers, with an optional eighth seat in the lavatory, and is known for its reliability—making Tuesday’s tragedy all the more stunning to industry observers.

In the aftermath of the crash, Loop 20 was closed in both directions for an extended period as authorities secured the scene, managed spilled jet fuel, and began the painstaking process of collecting evidence. Local police redirected traffic to surrounding streets, and the Laredo Police Department requested that anyone with dashcam or cellphone video of the incident upload it to their digital evidence portal to assist federal agencies.

For the city of Laredo, the crash was both a tragedy and a testament to community resilience. The swift response by motorists, police, and firefighters prevented a greater loss of life, and the investigation now underway promises to shed light on what went wrong. As attorney Clifford put it, "These families deserve answers." For now, Laredo mourns the loss of life and waits for clarity on the causes behind this rare and devastating accident.
