Matthew Fox Returns To TV In Sheridan’s The Madison

After a decade-long hiatus to focus on family, Matthew Fox stars alongside Michelle Pfeiffer in Taylor Sheridan’s intimate new Yellowstone spinoff, The Madison, premiering on Paramount+ this March.

After more than a decade away from regular television work, Matthew Fox—best known for his role as Dr. Jack Shephard on the hit series Lost—is making a much-anticipated return to the small screen. The 59-year-old actor, who stepped away from Hollywood in 2015 to focus on family and personal projects, is back in the spotlight as he stars in Taylor Sheridan’s new Paramount+ series, The Madison, premiering March 14, 2026.

Fox’s decision to leave acting wasn’t made lightly. The grueling schedule of Lost, which aired from 2004 to 2010, along with subsequent film roles, meant he missed much of his sons’ formative years. “I felt like it was time to engage really intensely with my family,” Fox told Variety at the New York premiere of The Madison on March 9. “I had missed some of their childhood because I was on set all the time with Lost and doing films and promoting everything. It was the right moment for me to step back and take a moment and engage with the people that I love and care about the most in the world.”

Fox’s hiatus from acting, which lasted from around 2014 to 2021, wasn’t just about being present for his wife, Margherita Ronchi, and their sons, Kyle (28) and Byron (25). He also explored other creative avenues, working on music and writing projects that were, in his words, “really personal to me.” As he reflected in a 2022 interview, “I kind of had a bucket list in my mind of things that I wanted to accomplish in the business. I wanted to do a Western. It’s a very odd Western, but it’s a Western. And so that sort of completed the bucket list.” That Western was the 2015 film Bone Tomahawk, which Fox credits with rounding out his professional ambitions.

But the lure of storytelling eventually called him back. “I kind of missed storytelling,” Fox admitted to Variety. When Taylor Sheridan, the prolific creator behind Yellowstone, approached him about joining The Madison, Fox didn’t hesitate. “I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m in,’” he said, noting that he’s now found a way to balance his home life and work obligations—a stark contrast to his earlier years in Hollywood.

The Madison is set against the sweeping backdrop of Montana’s Madison River Valley. The series follows a wealthy New York City family who, after the tragic deaths of two relatives in a plane crash, uproot their lives and move west. Fox plays Paul, a rugged bachelor thriving in the great outdoors, while Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Stacy Clyburn, the grieving matriarch tasked with guiding her family through loss and upheaval.

Pfeiffer’s involvement in the project came with its own leap of faith. The Oscar and Emmy-nominated actress, now 67, accepted Sheridan’s offer without reading a script. “I committed to it without even having read anything,” Pfeiffer revealed to Entertainment Weekly at the show’s New York City premiere. “It was really just [Sheridan] explaining the scope of the character and kind of the outline of where it was going.” Despite her requests to see a script first, Sheridan insisted on casting before writing. “We went back and forth over a couple of weeks like that, and then I realized I wasn’t going to win this argument and I was either going to have to commit or give it up,” Pfeiffer explained.

The cast of The Madison is stacked with talent, including Kurt Russell, Beau Garrett, Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, Alaina Pollack, Ben Schnetzer, Kevin Zegers, Rebecca Spence, Danielle Vasinova, and Will Arnett. The series is being described as Sheridan’s “most intimate work to date,” focusing on grief and the complex ties that bind families together. According to a press release, it’s “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection” that “examines the ties that bind families together.”

Russell, who also stars in the show, teased its unique approach earlier this year: “I think that it’s a very different show for Taylor in that it’s a very female-gaze-oriented show. And I think it’s extremely well written, it was fun to play. It was really fun to do. I just had a good time. It’s a smart show. He’s a really good writer—Taylor’s excellent, and Michelle’s great, and she's really great in this show. Talking about awards—I think they’re going to be looking Michelle’s way.”

The Madison was initially expected to be a direct sequel to Yellowstone but has since evolved into a standalone series, though it remains set within the broader Yellowstone universe. The original show, which ran from 2018 to 2024 and starred Kevin Costner as the patriarch of the Dutton ranching dynasty, was a massive ratings hit. Its final season premiere drew an astonishing 12.1 million viewers, cementing Sheridan’s status as a powerhouse in television drama. The Madison arrives just weeks after Sheridan’s latest spinoff, The Marshals, starring Luke Grimes, further expanding the universe’s reach.

For Fox, the journey back to acting was gradual. He first returned to TV in 2022 with the limited series Last Light, followed by the comedy CAUGH*T. But it’s The Madison that marks his true return to the kind of sweeping, character-driven storytelling that made him a household name. Fox’s earlier career saw him rise to fame on Party of Five (1994–2000) before becoming the face of Lost, earning multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. His film credits include Smokin’ Aces, We Are Marshall, Vantage Point, Speed Racer, World War Z, and, of course, Bone Tomahawk.

Fox’s return is not just a professional milestone but a personal triumph—a testament to the possibility of balancing family, personal fulfillment, and creative ambition. As he put it, “I really felt like I was retiring from the business, and working on other creative elements that are really personal to me—some music and writing.” Yet, when the right project came along, he found himself drawn back in. And for fans of both Fox and Sheridan’s work, The Madison promises to be a compelling new chapter.

The first three episodes of The Madison premiere Saturday, March 14, 2026, on Paramount+, with the final three episodes following on March 21. For viewers eager to see Fox’s return, and Pfeiffer’s bold leap into Sheridan’s world, there’s plenty to look forward to in this intimate, emotionally charged drama set in the heart of Montana.
