KT Wiz Extend Lead As SSG Landers Rally And Rookies Shine

Late-inning heroics, losing streaks snapped, and a rookie home run highlight a wild day in the KBO League as KT Wiz maintain first place and SSG Landers storm into third.

The 2026 KBO League season kept fans on the edge of their seats on April 23, as a string of dramatic performances shook up the standings and delivered much-needed relief—or disappointment—to teams across the board. With KT Wiz solidifying their spot at the top, SSG Landers mounting a stunning late-game comeback, and rookie stars making headlines, the day was packed with storylines that will be talked about for weeks to come.

At Suwon KT Wiz Park, the KT Wiz put on a show for their home crowd, defeating the KIA Tigers 8-3 and completing a sweep of the three-game series. This victory pushed KT's season record to an impressive 16-6, keeping them firmly in first place. The Tigers, meanwhile, found themselves mired in a five-game losing streak, stuck in fifth place despite having enjoyed an eight-game winning run just days earlier.

Things looked shaky for KT early, as starting pitcher So Hyeong-jun gave up two runs in the top of the first. But KT's bats roared to life in the bottom half. With two outs and the bases loaded, Oh Yoon-seok delivered a clutch two-RBI single to level the score. Not to be outdone, Kim Sang-su followed with a go-ahead two-run double, and Jang Jun-won capped the rally with an RBI single, giving KT a 5-2 lead before the dust had settled. "Our lineup just kept grinding at-bats and we took advantage of every opportunity," said KT manager Lee Kang-chul after the game.

So Hyeong-jun settled in after the shaky start, pitching five innings with six hits and five strikeouts, allowing three runs (two earned) to notch his third win of the season. Veteran infielder Kim Sang-su was the offensive star, driving in three runs and collecting a crucial hit in the opening frame. Kim Hyun-soo also chipped in with two hits and an RBI, keeping the pressure on the Tigers throughout. On the other side, KIA’s Lee Eui-ri struggled mightily, surrendering five runs in five innings and taking his third loss of the year. Despite multi-hit games from Park Min and Kim Ho-ryeong, KIA’s offense couldn’t keep pace.

Down south in Busan, the Lotte Giants finally snapped a five-game skid, toppling the Doosan Bears 6-1 and climbing out of last place just a day after falling to the bottom. Elvin Rodriguez was the hero on the mound, tossing six innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts to earn his third win. The Giants’ offense was sparked by Jeon Min-jae, who notched two hits and two RBIs, including the go-ahead hit in the second inning. Victor Reyes also provided a pair of hits and an RBI. Doosan’s Jack Loge, who had been on a roll, faltered, giving up five runs over four innings and suffering his third loss. Despite tallying eight hits, the Bears could only muster a single run, their four-game winning streak coming to an abrupt halt.

Meanwhile, at Seoul’s Jamsil Stadium, the Hanwha Eagles ended their own two-game slide with an 8-4 win over the LG Twins. The Eagles moved up to a tie for sixth place, while LG’s three-game winning streak was snapped. The big story for Hanwha was the return of No Si-hwan, who had been sent to the second team to work out early-season struggles. Making his comeback, No Si-hwan blasted his first home run of the season in the fourth inning to tie the game. He finished with two hits, one walk, and one RBI, signaling a possible turnaround. "It felt great to finally help the team with my bat," No Si-hwan said, his confidence clearly on the rebound. Jonathan Peraza and Moon Hyun-bin also went deep for Hanwha, fueling the Eagles’ power surge. For LG, Austin Dean’s late solo homer in the ninth was too little, too late, as the Twins failed to recover from the early deficit.

In Daegu, SSG Landers staged the comeback of the night, storming back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Samsung Lions 8-2 with a jaw-dropping seven-run rally in the ninth inning. The win completed a sweep of the three-game set and vaulted SSG into third place, while Samsung tumbled to fourth after suffering their fourth straight loss. SSG starter Mitch White was solid, going six innings with seven strikeouts and allowing only two runs (one earned). The offense, however, saved its fireworks for the final frame. Choi Jeong led off the ninth with a triple, and Guillermo Heredia’s RBI single tied the game. With the bases loaded, Choi Ji-hoon smacked a two-run double to give SSG the lead, and Ahn Sang-hyun put the game out of reach with a three-run homer. "We never gave up. This team believes in late-inning magic," said Choi Jeong, who finished with three hits. Samsung’s Jack O’Rourke had pitched well (six innings, one run) but watched as the bullpen unraveled in the final moments.

Finally, over at Gocheok Sky Dome, the NC Dinos delivered a statement victory, trouncing the Kiwoom Heroes 12-2 to climb from a tie for seventh to a tie for sixth in the standings. The game was a coming-out party for rookie Go Jun-hwi, who hit his first career home run—a two-run shot in the seventh—and drove in four runs on the night. "It’s a dream come true to get my first hit and home run in the same game," Go Jun-hwi told reporters, grinning from ear to ear. Starter Koo Chang-mo was equally impressive, tossing six innings of one-run ball for his third win. For Kiwoom, it was a rough outing for Kim Yeon-joo, who was tagged for six runs in just 2⅓ innings, and the loss sent the Heroes back to the bottom of the league table.

With KT holding a 1.5-game edge over LG in the standings, and SSG, Hanwha, and Lotte all surging, the KBO League’s early-season drama is only heating up. Fans can expect more fireworks in the days ahead as teams jockey for position and new heroes emerge. For now, the storylines belong to KT’s relentless lineup, SSG’s never-say-die spirit, and the rising stars making their mark on Korea’s biggest baseball stage.
