Knight Riders End Titans Streak With Explosive Win

Kolkata Knight Riders snap Gujarat Titans’ five-game run as Finn Allen’s 93 and Sunil Narine’s milestone bowling lift playoff hopes at Eden Gardens.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have reignited their Indian Premier League 2026 campaign with a statement-making 29-run victory over the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the iconic Eden Gardens on May 16. This thrilling contest not only snapped GT’s impressive five-match winning streak but also catapulted KKR to sixth place on the points table, breathing new life into their playoff aspirations as the league enters its decisive phase.

Coming into the match, Gujarat Titans had been the form team of the tournament, thriving on bowler-friendly surfaces and sharp fielding. But under the Eden Gardens lights, the script flipped dramatically. KKR, led by captain Ajinkya Rahane, unleashed a batting onslaught that left fans and pundits alike buzzing. The home side piled up a mammoth 247 for 2—one of the highest totals seen this season—setting the stage for a dramatic evening of cricket in Kolkata.

Finn Allen, the explosive New Zealand opener, proved to be the game-changer with a blistering knock of 93. Twice dropped by the GT fielders, Allen made the most of his reprieves, punishing anything loose and peppering the boundaries with audacious strokeplay. His innings, a blend of power and precision, laid the platform for KKR’s imposing total. As GT skipper Shubman Gill candidly admitted after the match, “We dropped too many catches. Pitch was good, the odd one was stopping, but I felt we batted well to get to the score we did. No concerns, but our fielding could've been a lot better.”

Allen wasn’t alone in his heroics. Youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi, playing with a maturity beyond his years, carved out a career-best 82 not out. Raghuvanshi’s role was as much about composure as aggression. Reflecting on his performance, he shared, “Yes, I did, especially because we won. Got so easy for me, just had to give him (Allen) a strike and watch from the other end. That was my role at the start of the innings. I'm not used to the keeping duties; it's taking everything out of me. The score says it all. I thought it was a great surface. Hope we can play on these surfaces every game. They have to kick me out of the nets, I play a lot of balls. Ever since I was a kid, my coach, Abhishek Nayar, has gotten me used to hitting 1000 balls a day.”

Adding further firepower, Cameron Green chipped in with a brisk cameo, ensuring the Titans’ bowlers never settled. KKR’s intent was clear from the outset—attack, dominate, and keep the foot on the gas. Captain Ajinkya Rahane, visibly pleased with his team’s approach, remarked, “Very good game, really happy with two points. Amazing to see Allen, Angkrish, and Green's knocks. Credit goes to these batters. Preparation has always been fantastic. Talk was all about taking one game at a time. Intent was amazing. Don't forget they're a quality bowling attack. It was amazing to see batters going out there and dominating.”

While the batters grabbed the headlines, KKR’s bowlers played their part to perfection. Saurabh Dubey, a rising talent with roots in the Vidarbha league, impressed with his discipline and control. Sunil Narine, the ever-reliable all-rounder, delivered yet again on a milestone night—his 200th IPL appearance. Narine’s spell of 2 for 29 stifled the GT chase and earned him the Player of the Match award. Reflecting on his journey, Narine said, “It comes with hard work. The guys have been training really well, putting in the hard yards, and it's showing. Hope it continues, no matter what the tournament has in store for us. It's all about planning what is in front of you. Every game brings a different challenge. All about trying to win the scenarios and trying not to overthink. Being a senior guy, God has given me the talent and health to play 200; hopefully, I play many more.”

Rahane was quick to highlight the value of his bowling unit, stating, “It's all about trusting their ability. All these guys have been doing well in the domestic season. Saurabh Dubey played well in the Vidarbha league. When he came here, all the coaches thought he had the talent. Credit to these guys who have been doing well, working hard, it's all about belief and confidence. Makes my job easy when you know Sunil Narine is in the team. Varun was struggling, but credit to him as well. The courage to play with a sore foot.”

For Gujarat Titans, the loss was a wake-up call. The usually sharp fielding unit faltered at crucial moments, with three dropped catches—two of them letting Allen off the hook. Skipper Shubman Gill offered an honest assessment: “We set a certain standard, and dropping 3 sitters - we didn't deserve to win this one. Looking at it that way, best to have a game like this now than in the Qualifiers. I think rest and recover for a couple of days, travel back to Ahmedabad, see how the wicket is, and then plan accordingly (for the next game).”

Despite the setback, GT remain in a strong position on the points table, but this defeat underscores the fine margins in T20 cricket. A single fielding lapse can swing the momentum, and on this night, KKR capitalized on every opportunity.

The victory propels KKR just behind Punjab Kings, who currently occupy fourth place. With the playoff race heating up, every match takes on added significance. The Knight Riders’ resurgence is timely, and with their confidence soaring, they’ll be eyeing a strong finish to the league stages.

Looking ahead, the next big clash for KKR will be against the Mumbai Indians in the 65th match of the IPL 2026. Both teams will be eager to solidify their playoff credentials, and with squad depth on display, fans can expect another high-octane encounter. The Kolkata faithful will be hoping that Allen, Raghuvanshi, and Narine can continue their rich vein of form and keep the Eden Gardens crowd on its feet.

As the IPL 2026 enters its final stretch, the battle for playoff spots intensifies. KKR’s emphatic win over GT has thrown the race wide open and sent a clear message to the rest of the league: underestimate the Knight Riders at your own peril. With momentum on their side and key players stepping up, KKR’s journey promises plenty of drama and excitement in the days ahead.
