James Van Der Beek, the actor who captured the hearts of a generation as Dawson Leery on Dawson's Creek, died peacefully on February 11, 2026, at the age of 48 after a three-year battle with colorectal cancer. His passing, confirmed by his wife Kimberly Van Der Beek on Instagram, has left a profound void not only in his family but also among his fans and colleagues in Hollywood. As tributes continue to pour in, the Van Der Beek family now faces a daunting financial reality, prompting an outpouring of public support through a swiftly launched GoFundMe campaign.

Kimberly Van Der Beek, his widow, broke the news of James’s death in a heartfelt statement: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.” The family’s grief is compounded by the financial strain left in the wake of James’s extended cancer treatment. As Kimberly revealed, “The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds.”

The GoFundMe campaign, organized by Kimberly and shared on both her and James’s social media accounts, was launched within hours of his death. The response was immediate and overwhelming. By 7:30 p.m. on February 11, the fundraiser had already surpassed $598,000 toward its $1 million target, according to Business Insider. The campaign’s initial goal was set at $500,000, but as donations poured in from more than 7,000 individuals, the target was quickly raised—first to $700,000, and then to $1 million—to reflect the family’s ongoing needs.

“My friends created this link to support me and our children during this time. With gratitude and a broken heart,” Kimberly wrote in her Instagram story. The GoFundMe page further explained that the funds would help cover essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the education of their six children: Olivia, 15; Joshua, 13; Annabel, 12; Emilia, 9; Gwendolyn, 6; and Jeremiah, 4. “In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future,” the campaign stated. “They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”

GoFundMe confirmed to Business Insider that they are working closely with the family to ensure that all funds raised safely reach Kimberly and the children. “Funds are being held safely by our payment processor in the meantime,” a spokesperson said, emphasizing the company’s commitment to transparency and security for the bereaved family.

James Van Der Beek’s cancer journey began in early 2023, but it wasn’t until November 2024 that he publicly disclosed his diagnosis of stage 3 colorectal cancer. He described his cancer battle as a “full-time job” involving endless appointments, insurance battles, and tough conversations with his children, as reported by People. Still, he tried to remain optimistic, telling NBC’s Craig Melvin in December 2025, “I feel much, much better than I did a couple months ago. It’s been a longer journey than I ever thought it would be. It’s required more of me—more patience, more discipline, more strength than I knew I had. I knew I was strong—I didn’t know I was this strong.”

Despite his optimism, the financial toll of his treatment was immense. In an effort to help offset mounting medical bills, Van Der Beek auctioned off personal memorabilia from both Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the auction raised over $47,000, with the highest-valued item—a necklace from Dawson’s Creek—selling for $26,628. Van Der Beek wrote on Instagram at the time, “100% of my net proceeds will go to families recovering from the financial burden of cancer (including my own).” He had been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to put them to good use, but the urgency of his family’s situation made the decision clear.

In September 2025, his former Dawson’s Creek castmates, including Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson, reunited for a one-night charity event in New York to help raise money for the Van Der Beek family. Lin-Manuel Miranda stepped in for James, who was unable to attend due to illness.

As news of his death spread, tributes from friends and former colleagues flooded social media. Busy Philipps, his Dawson’s Creek castmate, wrote, “James Van Der Beek was one in a billion and he will be forever missed and I don’t know what else to say. I am just so so sad.” Chad Michael Murray added, “James was a giant. We’re so so so sorry for what you’re going through. His words, art and humanity inspired all of us—he inspired us to be better in all ways.” Sarah Michelle Gellar, a longtime friend, shared, “I’m so sad for your beautiful family. While James’ legacy will always live on, this is a huge loss to not just your family but the world.”

James Van Der Beek’s career spanned more than two decades. Born on March 8, 1977, in Cheshire, Connecticut, he began his acting journey in school productions before moving to off-Broadway and eventually landing the role that would define his career. Dawson’s Creek ran from 1998 to 2003, cementing Van Der Beek as a teen idol. He went on to star in films such as Varsity Blues and took on roles in television series including Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, CSI: Cyber, and Pose. He also made memorable appearances on reality shows like Dancing With the Stars and The Masked Singer.

Through it all, Van Der Beek was fiercely devoted to his family. He and Kimberly built a life together with their six children, and he often spoke about the importance of stability and love at home, even as he faced the gravest challenges. In her GoFundMe appeal, Kimberly expressed both heartbreak and gratitude: “Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives.”

As the Van Der Beek family grieves, the generosity of friends, fans, and strangers alike stands as a testament to the impact James had on so many. Their support offers a glimmer of hope and a path toward stability for a family navigating unimaginable loss.
