Jaecoo 8 SUV Challenges Rivals With Luxury And Range

The new Jaecoo 8 brings seven-seat flexibility, premium tech, and a 700-mile hybrid range to the UK market, aiming to rival established luxury SUVs at a lower price point.

Under the bright lights of the UK automotive scene, a new contender has rolled into view—one that’s already turning heads for its bold styling, ambitious engineering, and competitive price tag. The Jaecoo 8 SHS-P, now officially the flagship SUV for the Jaecoo brand, is making waves with its Range Rover-inspired looks, seven-seat flexibility, and a plug-in hybrid system that promises a staggering 700-mile combined range. As families, professionals, and car enthusiasts flock to showrooms, the big question is whether this upstart can truly challenge established rivals while offering genuine luxury at a fraction of the cost.

According to The Independent, Jaecoo’s new flagship is more than just a pretty face. The 8 SHS-P is the first model from the brand to offer both six- and seven-seat layouts within a single vehicle. The Luxury trim, starting at £45,500, targets families with its seven-seat configuration and multiple ISOFIX child seat mounting points—crucial for those juggling car seats and school runs. Meanwhile, the £47,500 Executive trim swaps out the traditional second row for two heated, ventilated, and massaging captain’s chairs, aiming squarely at buyers who value comfort and a premium experience. The driver isn’t left out either, with extendable thigh support for those longer journeys.

But it’s what’s under the skin that really sets the Jaecoo 8 apart. Both trims utilize the Chery Group’s Super Hybrid System, which pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a three-speed DHT transmission and dual electric motors. This setup produces a combined 422bhp and 580Nm of torque, launching the SUV from 0 to 62mph in just 5.8 seconds, as reported by The Independent. For a vehicle of this size and price, that’s not just impressive—it’s almost unheard of.

Range anxiety? Jaecoo’s engineers have done their homework. The plug-in hybrid system features a 34.5kWh battery, delivering up to 83 miles of electric-only driving—enough for most daily commutes or school runs without a drop of petrol. When longer journeys beckon, the combined petrol-and-electric range exceeds 700 miles on a full tank and battery, according to El-Balad.com. For those who value their time, the battery supports up to 40kW DC fast charging, allowing a 30 to 80 percent top-up in around 20 minutes. That’s a quick coffee break and you’re back on the road.

Practicality is another strong suit. The Jaecoo 8 stretches to 4.8 metres in length, offering up to 2,021 litres of luggage space with the seats folded. Whether you’re hauling camping gear, sports equipment, or the weekly shop, there’s plenty of room to spare. The Executive trim’s four Nappa-leather captain’s chairs provide a first-class experience for rear passengers, while the Luxury’s seven-seat layout ensures no one gets left behind.

Inside, Jaecoo has gone all out to deliver a premium feel. Dual 12.3-inch displays dominate the dashboard, accompanied by wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cooled wireless charging pads, and a panoramic sunroof. Music lovers will appreciate the 14-speaker Sony sound system, which even integrates speakers into the headrests for more personal phone calls and navigation instructions. Front seats offer heating, ventilation, and five massage modes. The Executive version adds a zero-gravity front passenger seat with a 123-degree adjustable angle, plus a “Boss Button” allowing rear passengers to adjust the front seat for maximum legroom.

Safety hasn’t been overlooked. The Jaecoo 8 features 10 airbags and up to 19 driver assistance systems, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot detection. The body structure uses up to 85 percent high-strength steel, underscoring the brand’s commitment to occupant protection.

For those who like to venture off the beaten path, the Jaecoo 8 brings serious off-road credentials. Lockable differentials, an adaptive all-terrain response system, and a wading depth of up to 600mm mean the SUV is more than just a city slicker. Continuous damping control adaptive suspension helps maintain stability across a variety of surfaces, while a 6.6kW vehicle-to-load function lets you power external devices—perfect for camping trips or outdoor adventures, as highlighted by The Independent.

Despite all these premium features, the Jaecoo 8’s engineering roots remain firmly tied to the Chery Group. Both FilmoGaz and El-Balad.com point out that the SUV shares its platform and hybrid hardware with the Chery Tiggo 9 and Omoda 9. This shared DNA, known as the Super Hybrid System, is the backbone of Jaecoo’s impressive range and performance claims. While this means the Jaecoo 8 can capitalize on proven technology and economies of scale, it also raises questions about how the brand will continue to position itself in the competitive UK market. Will future flagship models break away with unique underpinnings, or is the current approach—premium trim on a shared platform—here to stay?

Victor Zhang, Jaecoo’s UK country director, is clear about the brand’s ambitions. “This is the first time we’re offering both a six- and a seven-seat configuration within a single model, ensuring the Jaecoo 8 is suited to a wide range of use cases—from families to professionals and everyone in between. As our flagship, and the halo model for us here in the UK, it plays a key role in showcasing what Jaecoo stands for, bringing together our approach to modern design, advanced hybrid technology and genuine all-road capability in a way that feels both premium and highly usable.”

Market response has been swift. Last year, Jaecoo sold 28,232 cars in the UK, and nearly 7,000 units have already found homes in the first two months of 2026. Every Jaecoo comes with a seven-year or 100,000-mile warranty, plus an eight-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty—reassuring for buyers new to the brand or hybrid technology.

Still, some industry observers, including FilmoGaz, note a tension between Jaecoo’s upmarket aspirations and its reliance on shared Chery engineering. The brand’s pricing undercuts many established plug-in hybrid rivals, but the question remains: is this a true luxury SUV, or simply a well-equipped value proposition? For now, the Jaecoo 8’s blend of style, technology, and practicality is hard to ignore, especially for buyers who want Range Rover flair without the eye-watering price tag.

With order books now open and first deliveries expected from May 2026, the Jaecoo 8 SHS-P stands poised to shake up the SUV market. Whether it becomes a mainstay of British roads or a niche choice for savvy buyers, it’s already made an impression—one that’s likely to spark plenty of discussion in the months ahead.
