This level of end-to-end management signals a shift toward becoming a full-fledged energy developer, not just a builder.

Securing the financial backbone for such a large undertaking was no trivial matter. In April 2026, Hyundai Engineering finalized financing agreements worth about $310 million (roughly 460 billion Korean won) with four financial institutions, including the Korea Development Bank. In 2021, it completed the Saemangeum onshore solar project in South Korea. By 2024, it was selected as a strategic partner for a 1 GW solar project in Serbia, further cementing its presence in the European market. At home, the company has invested in solar power facilities to help domestic Hyundai Motor Group sites achieve their RE100 goals. Its reach now extends into nuclear energy, having participated in the design of a research reactor at the University of Missouri, and into hydrogen, with projects like the Boryeong hydrogen production base in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea. In 2023, Hyundai Engineering also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute to pursue small modular reactor exports.

Industry analysts see Hyundai Engineering’s move as part of a broader trend among South Korean construction firms. With the domestic real estate market cooling and overseas plant construction opportunities shrinking, companies are seeking new growth engines.
