Gunpo Azalea Festival Returns With Nine Days Of Celebration

Gunpo’s annual azalea festival features expanded citizen participation, music, art, and vibrant spring blooms across the city.

As spring sweeps across South Korea, Gunpo City in Gyeonggi Province is gearing up to celebrate one of its most cherished seasonal traditions: the 2026 Gunpo Azalea Festival. Now in its twelfth year, this vibrant event will run for nine days, from April 18 to April 26, transforming the city into a lively tapestry of pink blossoms, music, art, and community spirit. Organizers, participants, and visitors alike are anticipating a festival that not only showcases nature’s beauty but also places citizens and local artists at the very heart of the celebration.

This year’s slogan, “Citizens’ daily life becomes a festival,” sets the tone for what promises to be a uniquely participatory affair. According to reporting by 경기핫타임뉴스, the Gunpo Cultural Foundation has been hard at work, expanding opportunities for residents to join in and shaping the event into a true community gathering. “We hope that the 2026 Gunpo Azalea Festival, prepared with citizens and local artists, will blossom culture and become a participatory cultural festival beyond a representative spring flower festival,” said Jeon Hyung-joo, CEO of the Gunpo Cultural Foundation.

The festival’s focal point is the spectacular Gunpo Azalea Hill, where azaleas are expected to reach full bloom by mid-April. During the festival, this hillside will be awash in vivid pink, creating a breathtaking backdrop for festivities. To ensure safe and enjoyable viewing, the city will implement ‘car-free zones’ on roads near the main venue during the opening weekend, April 18 and 19. This move, as reported by local officials, aims to “ensure pedestrian safety and a pleasant viewing environment.”

The opening day, April 18, is packed with events designed for all ages. Things kick off at 11 AM with the ‘Play Stage,’ a series of performances emphasizing citizen participation and rhythm. Acts include Roro Company’s instrumental show, Show All’s magic tricks, Moon Kyung-min’s popera, and Ernest Music’s jazz ensemble. By 2 PM, the spotlight shifts to the youth, with a song contest inviting the city’s teenagers to showcase their vocal talents. This is followed by the much-anticipated opening ceremony at 7 PM, set on a special stage at Azalea Hill.

The evening’s concert will feature acclaimed singers Park Jung-hyun and Lee Seung-gi, whose emotive voices are sure to captivate the audience. They’ll be joined by the Dreamter Choir, a group composed of Gunpo’s own children, who will deliver a moving performance to mark the festival’s official start. Adding to the sense of community, a citizen shorts video titled ‘Our Memories Bloom Again’ will be screened, capturing the enthusiasm and shared history of Gunpo’s residents.

But the festivities hardly end there. Throughout the festival, Sanbon Rodeo Street and Chomakgol Ecological Park will come alive with busking performances and hands-on experience events, ensuring that the festive spirit permeates every corner of the city. On the first weekend, visitors can also enjoy a parade by Gunpo Pungmul School and a performance by ‘OnFlickH,’ the group that took home the Best Performance award at last year’s Youth Street Dance Festival, ‘YOUTH ON FESTA.’

The festival’s program is impressively diverse. On April 19, Hansei University will present a musical gala show at noon, followed by a classical performance by the Gunpo Prime Philharmonic Orchestra at 3 PM, both at the car-free special stage. Later in the week, on April 23, Azalea Hill will host an ‘Arirang Night’ event, celebrating traditional Korean music. The following day, April 24, features performances by the Flower Singers (a female chorus), Arte Ensemble (saxophone), and Sorimoa (acoustic guitar) from 11 AM to 4:30 PM.

One of the most notable changes this year is the substantial expansion of citizen participation programs. The festival’s organizers have rebranded these as Azalea Stage, Azalea Food, and Azalea Market, with a marked increase in involvement from local small businesses and artists. The Azalea Market will feature 20 teams—seven more than last year—while the Azalea Stage welcomes 10 additional local artist groups, infusing the festival grounds with fresh energy and creativity.

Art lovers will find plenty to admire as well. Around Azalea Park, exhibitions will showcase works by lifelong learning village students, citizen participants from Gunpo’s lifelong learning campuses, and a special poetry exhibition from the adult literacy school, Neutinamu School. This inclusive approach ensures that people of all ages and backgrounds can see their efforts celebrated and their voices heard.

Behind the scenes, Gunpo City is sparing no effort to make the festival welcoming and safe. Convenience facilities near the festival site are being inspected, and safety personnel will be on hand throughout the event. To enhance the experience, lighting installations have been upgraded so visitors can enjoy the azaleas’ beauty even after sunset, offering a nighttime spectacle distinct from the daytime view.

Given the expected influx of visitors, parking is anticipated to be in short supply. City officials strongly recommend using public transportation, particularly Surisan Station on Subway Line 4, to reach the festival. And with the hilly terrain of Azalea Hill, attendees are advised to wear comfortable sneakers, as plenty of walking is on the agenda.

The festival’s reach extends beyond the physical venues, too. An online festival reporter group is actively sharing updates and live news across various digital channels, keeping the community informed and engaged even before the first azalea blooms.

Ultimately, the 2026 Gunpo Azalea Festival is shaping up to be more than just a flower show. It’s a celebration of the city’s unique blend of natural beauty and urban vitality, a chance for residents and visitors to come together, and a testament to the power of community-driven culture. Whether you’re drawn by the music, the art, the food, or simply the dazzling sea of pink blossoms, there’s something for everyone in Gunpo this April. For those who make the journey, it promises to be an experience where daily life truly does become a festival.
