Greenwood’s International Future Unclear As England And Jamaica Wait

Despite acquiring a Jamaican passport and strong club form at Marseille, Mason Greenwood has delayed his decision on international allegiance, leaving both England and Jamaica in suspense ahead of key World Cup qualifiers.

Mason Greenwood’s international future remains shrouded in uncertainty as both England and Jamaica await a final decision from the Marseille forward. The 23-year-old, who has not featured for the Three Lions since his solitary cap in 2020, now finds himself at the center of a tug-of-war between two national teams—yet, for the moment, he’s not committing to either. The saga has left coaches, fans, and football observers scratching their heads, wondering which shirt Greenwood will finally choose to don on the world stage.

Greenwood’s eligibility for Jamaica was cemented when national team boss Steve McClaren orchestrated the acquisition of a Jamaican passport for the striker. The move was designed to secure Greenwood’s participation in Jamaica’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago. But despite administrative preparations, Greenwood has yet to complete the crucial change of association paperwork—a step that would officially tie him to the Reggae Boyz and make any future England call-up impossible.

McClaren’s anticipation quickly turned to disappointment. “We acquired a passport and we expected him to be coming to this camp, but in a conversation with his family, he’s not going to commit at this time to anybody,” McClaren explained, according to multiple sources. “It’s a little bit disappointing, we probably have to be more patient. We will keep pursuing him because I know from my conversations with Mason that he loves Jamaica, respects Jamaica. He wants to concentrate on club football and not commit to an international team at the present moment. We have to respect that however much we’ve worked hard to get him here for these camps. So, who knows in the future.”

Greenwood’s reluctance to make a final decision has not only frustrated McClaren but has also left the door ajar for a potential England return. Yet, England manager Thomas Tuchel has made it clear that Greenwood is not currently under consideration for the Three Lions. “I have not spoken to him until now,” Tuchel said. “I have not spoken to him or his camp. My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn’t give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team. I don’t rule anything out, but he is no priority at the moment.”

It’s a remarkable turn of events for a player once heralded as one of England’s brightest prospects. Greenwood’s only senior England appearance came in September 2020, when he featured in a Nations League match against Iceland under then-manager Gareth Southgate. That debut, however, quickly turned sour. Greenwood, alongside Phil Foden, was sent home in disgrace after breaching UEFA’s strict COVID-19 bio-bubble by inviting two women to the team hotel—a move that infuriated the Football Association and cast a shadow over his international prospects.

The following years have been turbulent for the Manchester United academy graduate. In January 2022, Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United after allegations surfaced online involving a young woman. He was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour. Greenwood denied all charges, and the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case in February 2023, citing the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light.

After his suspension, Greenwood spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Getafe in Spain, where he worked to rebuild his professional reputation. His performances earned him a permanent move to Marseille last year. On the pitch, Greenwood has shown flashes of his old brilliance—he netted 21 goals and provided six assists in Ligue 1 last season, helping Marseille to a strong league finish. This term, he’s already found the net once, signaling that his club form remains sharp, even as his international future stays clouded.

Despite his impressive club performances, the question of international allegiance continues to loom large. For Jamaica, Greenwood’s addition would represent a significant coup. McClaren has not hidden his admiration for the forward’s abilities, stating, “It’s a disappointment for everybody because he would have been a big asset and he would have come here and enjoyed his football.” Yet, McClaren remains philosophical about the situation, emphasizing patience and respect for Greenwood’s decision-making process. “You move on and control what you can control,” the coach said. “As soon as that decision was made and he couldn’t commit, you move on. You don’t harp on it and don’t go, ‘What if this?’ or ‘what if that?’ — you move on and control what you can control.”

For England, the situation is equally complex. Since his debut, Greenwood has not been a regular feature in the national setup. He was briefly recalled by Gareth Southgate in May 2021 for England’s provisional Euro 2020 squad, but withdrew to recover from an underlying injury. With Thomas Tuchel now at the helm, Greenwood’s name does not feature in the current plans. Tuchel’s comments underline the sense that, as far as England is concerned, the Greenwood chapter may be closed—at least for now.

Greenwood’s indecision carries significant risks. By hesitating, he runs the danger of alienating both national teams and potentially finding himself in international limbo—a scenario where neither side is willing to offer him a lifeline. As one source put it, “He has to be careful he doesn’t burn his bridges with Jamaica and leave himself in international No Man’s Land.”

For now, Greenwood’s focus remains squarely on his club career in France. The forward has communicated, through his representatives and family, that he wishes to concentrate on his football at Marseille and avoid distractions from the international scene. That stance is understood and respected by both McClaren and Tuchel, even if it leaves both managers with a sense of what might have been.

The football world will continue to watch Greenwood’s next move with keen interest. Will he ultimately pledge his allegiance to Jamaica, helping to spearhead their World Cup qualification campaign? Or could an England recall—however unlikely at present—tempt him back to the Three Lions? For now, the only certainty is that Mason Greenwood’s international journey is on hold, leaving fans and coaches alike to wait, wonder, and hope for a resolution in the months ahead.

As Jamaica prepares for crucial World Cup qualifiers and England continues its own campaign, both teams will be forced to plan without Greenwood’s talents. The forward’s decision, whenever it comes, could reshape the fortunes of either side. Until then, the saga remains one of international football’s most intriguing storylines—a tale of talent, timing, and the weighty choice between two nations.
