FCSB Edge UTA Arad As Transfer Rumors Swirl

David Miculescu’s winner lifts FCSB in the SuperLiga play-out while Marius Coman’s national team call-up and Andrei Ivan’s uncertain transfer spark fresh intrigue for Romanian football fans.

The Arena Națională in Bucharest was buzzing with anticipation on March 20, 2026, as FCSB hosted UTA Arad in the second round of the SuperLiga play-out. With both teams eager to make a statement early in this crucial stage of the season, fans were treated to a tense and tightly contested match that ultimately swung in favor of the home side. FCSB edged out UTA Arad 1-0, thanks to a decisive strike from David Miculescu in the 57th minute—a moment that not only secured three points but also propelled FCSB to the top of the play-out standings.

The match itself was a showcase of discipline and determination. While UTA Arad fought valiantly, it was FCSB’s ability to control possession and dictate the tempo that made the difference. According to the club’s outspoken owner, Gigi Becali, the team’s performance was exactly what he wanted to see. “As long as the ball is with us, I have no worries. I don’t want to have nerves about football. Should I be nervous over a free kick? Even if we conceded late, it’d just be a draw. Am I afraid we won’t win the play-out? Possession was 70-30 for us, so what more do I need?” Becali declared in a phone interview with Digi Sport’s Fotbal Club. His comments reflected a philosophy that prioritizes quality of play over mere results—a stance that has often defined his leadership at FCSB.

But it wasn’t just the match result that captured headlines. In the immediate aftermath, Becali was pressed about swirling rumors regarding a potential summer transfer of Andrei Ivan, the talented forward currently plying his trade at Panserraikos. The speculation had reached fever pitch earlier in the day, with reports suggesting that Becali and Ivan had already reached an agreement on a monthly salary of 25,000 euros, setting the stage for a high-profile move once Ivan’s contract expires. Yet, in classic Becali fashion, his response was anything but straightforward.

“I have no idea. I don’t know. Someone else called me about it. I don’t know. It’s possible, I don’t know. Maybe it’s possible, but if it was, Mirel would have told me. If he wants to bring him in, let him bring him. If Rădoi doesn’t want him, then it’s not true. So what’s the point in discussing it? It’s absurd, imaginary,” Becali said, leaving fans and pundits alike scratching their heads. This contradictory statement only added fuel to the transfer rumor mill, even as it left the situation as clear as mud.

Andrei Ivan, for his part, is no stranger to the Romanian football scene. The 29-year-old has built a respectable career across several European clubs, including Universitatea Craiova, Krasnodar, Rapid Vienna, Adanaspor, and most recently, Panserraikos. In the current season, Ivan has tallied five goals and one assist in 23 appearances for the Greek outfit, underlining his continued value as a forward. It’s not the first time Becali has expressed interest, either. Back in 2024, he openly admitted, “I always wanted to sign him, but I have a principle. How can you throw him away and then I take him? You had him, you know why you let him go, you know what it’s about. They want to get rid of him, but I’ll take him. They asked me for 500,000 (from Universitatea Craiova for Ivan), but I won’t pay that much.”

While the Ivan saga remains unresolved, another storyline emerged from the UTA Arad camp that captured the imagination of Romanian football fans. Marius Coman, the 29-year-old striker who led the UTA line against FCSB, received his first-ever call-up to the Romanian national team for the upcoming World Cup playoff against Turkey on March 26. For Coman, the news was a dream realized after years of perseverance. “I am very happy, I had heard some whispers from the national team and I was really happy. I can say I’ve wanted this since I was a child—to reach the national team, even if it was just the youth teams. I’m very happy, it’s been a long-term goal. I told my wife, when I made the step to Sepsi and the first division, that at 29 I’d make it to the national team, and here it happened,” Coman shared on UTA Arad’s official Facebook page. He went on to credit his family and the club for supporting him through ups and downs, adding, “UTA helped me the most and I want to thank Mister for believing in me when no one else did. I’m glad I came to UTA and had my best period here.”

Coman’s journey to the national team is a testament to resilience. This season, he’s enjoyed the best form of his career, netting eight goals (seven in the SuperLiga and one in the Cup) and providing two assists. Four of those goals have come since the start of 2026, signaling a player in peak condition. According to Transfermarkt, Coman’s market value now stands at approximately 550,000 euros—a significant rise for a player who, just a few years ago, was fighting for recognition in Romania’s lower leagues. His career has taken him through several storied clubs, including CFR Cluj, Universitatea Cluj, CSM Reșița, Petrolul, and Corvinul Hunedoara, before joining UTA from Sepsi on loan. UTA is expected to activate a 60,000-euro buyout clause, payable in two installments to Laszlo Dioszegi, further solidifying Coman’s place in the squad.

Should Coman take the field against Turkey or in any subsequent playoff matches, he would become the first UTA Arad player to appear for Romania’s senior national team in 32 years. The last to do so was Adrian Ungur, who featured in a 1-0 victory over South Korea on February 2, 1994. Even more recently, UTA’s goalkeeper Florin Iacob was called up to the senior squad, but did not make an appearance. For Coman, the chance to break this long drought is both a personal milestone and a proud moment for the Arad faithful.

Back at Arena Națională, the match’s outcome leaves FCSB sitting atop the play-out standings, brimming with confidence as they look to maintain their form. UTA Arad, despite the narrow loss, can draw inspiration from Coman’s national team call-up and his strong season—a sign that the club is moving in the right direction. With the World Cup playoff just days away, all eyes will be on Coman as he aims to seize his moment on the international stage.

As the SuperLiga play-out continues and transfer rumors swirl, there’s no shortage of drama or intrigue in Romanian football. Whether it’s the uncertainty surrounding Andrei Ivan’s future or the excitement of a long-awaited national team debut, fans have plenty to talk about as the season heats up.
