Edinburgh’s Cold Town House Rooftop Bar Gets £500000 Makeover

A state-of-the-art retractable roof and modern terrace design aim to transform the iconic Grassmarket venue in time for Easter weekend.

Edinburgh’s vibrant hospitality scene is about to get a major upgrade this Easter, as the much-loved Cold Town House rooftop bar in the city’s Grassmarket undergoes a £500,000 transformation. Since opening its doors in 2019, Cold Town House has become a go-to destination for locals and tourists alike, thanks to its unbeatable location and panoramic views of the iconic Edinburgh Castle. Now, Signature Group—the company behind the venue—is raising the bar even higher with a two-month refurbishment project set to be unveiled just in time for the busy spring and summer season.

According to both SLTN and the Edinburgh Evening News, the ambitious renovation began in early March and is on track to wrap up by Friday, April 3, 2026, perfectly aligning with the Easter weekend festivities. The project promises a “showstopping design glow up,” with a suite of new features designed to maximize the venue’s unique position in the heart of the Grassmarket, where the southern face of Edinburgh Castle looms photogenically overhead.

But what’s driving this half-million-pound investment? According to Nic Wood, director at Signature Group, it’s all about enhancing the guest experience and cementing Cold Town House’s reputation as the city’s premier rooftop bar. “Cold Town House has already made its name as one of the capital’s most popular rooftop bar experiences, but we’re now taking the guest experience to new heights with our exciting new makeover this Easter,” Wood told SLTN. “We’re so lucky to offer our guests the ultimate city-centre location with amazing views of Edinburgh Castle.”

The centerpiece of the refurbishment is a state-of-the-art, transparent retractable roof, a first of its kind in Edinburgh. Engineered to withstand the city’s famously unpredictable weather, the roof will allow up to 100 guests to soak in those castle views year-round, regardless of rain, wind, or even the rare Scottish sun. The structure is not only UV-protective but also designed to bathe the rooftop in natural daylight, ensuring the space remains bright and inviting in every season.

“With our new retractable roof in place, we will now be able to guarantee a fabulous time to get together with friends and family, whatever the weather, come rain or shine,” Wood said. “We’re now the only venue in the whole of Edinburgh to offer a rooftop bar experience quite like this, so we’re really excited to be unveiling our new look to new visitors and our regular local customers from Friday, April 3.”

But the upgrades don’t stop at the roof. The entire terrace and bar layout are being reimagined, with a focus on creating the “ultimate alfresco destination” for the warmer months. The interior design, managed by Tibbats Interior Design, promises a fresh and modern aesthetic, while the new bar setup aims to streamline service and maximize comfort. Signature Group’s vision is clear: make Cold Town House the place to be when the sun (or even just a break in the clouds) graces Edinburgh’s city centre.

The project is also a boon for the local construction industry, with several Edinburgh-based firms lending their expertise. AJ Build and Management is overseeing the build, CBrown Electrical Services is handling the wiring, Outside Space Solutions is contributing to the exterior elements, and the Severino group is involved as well. The architectural vision comes courtesy of iKAD Architects Ltd, while Kiloh Associate Ltd is providing engineering support. This collaboration of local talent underscores Signature Group’s commitment not just to the hospitality sector, but to the wider Edinburgh community.

For those eager to experience the revamped rooftop, the countdown is on. The venue is set to reopen its doors on Friday, April 3, 2026, just as the city gears up for a bustling Easter weekend. Signature Group is encouraging guests to book in advance to secure a coveted spot on the rooftop, but walk-ins will also be welcomed on a first-come, first-served basis. With only 100 seats available under the new retractable roof, competition is sure to be fierce—especially as word spreads about the transformation.

Cold Town House’s relaunch comes at a time when the Grassmarket area is seeing a wave of investment and renewal, with other operators also upgrading their offerings ahead of peak tourist season. Still, Signature Group is confident that their latest project will set Cold Town House apart. “We’re so lucky to offer our guests the ultimate city-centre location with amazing views of Edinburgh Castle,” Wood reiterated, highlighting the unique blend of history, atmosphere, and modern comfort that the venue provides.

Signature Group itself is no stranger to ambitious projects. With a portfolio boasting more than 20 bars, restaurants, and hotels—including city favourites like McLarens on the Corner, Copper Blossom, The Rutland, The Huxley, Kyloe, and Badger & Co.—the company has long been a driving force in Edinburgh’s hospitality landscape. According to SLTN, Signature Group has pledged continued investment in its venues, with plans to launch new bars in both Edinburgh and Glasgow later in 2026. This ongoing commitment to growth and innovation is seen as a positive sign for the city’s post-pandemic recovery, offering both new experiences for locals and fresh draws for tourists returning to Scotland’s capital.

As the Easter weekend approaches, anticipation is building—not just for the reopening of Cold Town House, but for the promise of long, sunlit evenings spent sipping drinks with friends against the backdrop of one of Europe’s most famous castles. For many, the upgraded rooftop bar will be more than just a place to enjoy a pint; it will be a symbol of Edinburgh’s resilience, creativity, and enduring appeal.

With a blend of historic charm and cutting-edge design, Cold Town House’s new look is set to capture the imagination of locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re a first-time tourist or a regular seeking a new perspective on your city, the rooftop’s grand reopening offers a fresh reason to head to the Grassmarket—and maybe, just maybe, to raise a glass to Edinburgh’s ever-evolving skyline.
