Desmond Bane Lifts Magic Over Cavaliers In Thrilling NBA Clash

Orlando extends its winning streak to five as Bane’s late heroics and Banchero’s all-around excellence overcome Harden and Mitchell’s efforts in a high-scoring battle at Kia Center.

The Orlando Magic continued their remarkable post-All-Star break surge on March 11, 2026, toppling the Cleveland Cavaliers 128-122 in a high-octane showdown at Kia Center. With both teams jostling for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference, the national ESPN audience witnessed a contest that was anything but a defensive grind, featuring 12 lead changes and a host of standout performances.

From the opening tip, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a typical grind-it-out affair. Orlando, boasting the NBA’s top defensive rating since the All-Star break, flipped the script by coming out firing on all cylinders offensively. The Magic poured in 38 points in the first quarter, going an eye-popping 11-of-12 in the paint and attacking the rim at will. Their size advantage was evident, especially with Cleveland’s anchor Jarrett Allen sidelined by a knee injury. That absence left the Cavaliers struggling to contain Orlando’s big men and opened the door for the Magic’s frontcourt to dominate early.

Paolo Banchero, who has rapidly developed into Orlando’s cornerstone, set the tone. Though he missed his first two three-point attempts, Banchero kept his composure, finding teammates for easy baskets and finishing the first half with 17 points and five assists. He wasn’t just scoring—he was orchestrating, dishing out four assists in the opening frame alone. Banchero finished the night with 25 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, marking his 75th career game with at least 20 points, five boards, and five assists—a feat that ties him with Penny Hardaway for second all-time in Magic franchise history.

“We had to be locked in and this was a great team effort,” Banchero said in the locker room, underscoring the collective focus that’s fueled Orlando’s five-game winning streak. His willingness to adapt—scoring, playmaking, and defending—set the example for the rest of the roster.

But it was Desmond Bane who truly stole the show. Bane, acquired in the offseason to bolster Orlando’s perimeter attack, delivered a masterclass in clutch shot-making. He scored a game-high 35 points on 12-of-19 shooting, including 12 points in a pivotal third quarter that helped the Magic push their lead to double digits. When the Cavaliers mounted a furious late rally, trimming the deficit to just two points with 39 seconds left, it was Bane who answered the call. With the shot clock winding down and a defender draped all over him, he drained a tough, off-balance three-pointer from downtown with 18.3 seconds remaining, effectively sealing the victory.

“Winner,” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said when asked to describe Bane. “Whatever it takes, he is going to do (it). And that’s about the best word that describes him because he embodies so much of it. Winner and leader.”

Bane wasn’t done, either. After Cleveland was forced to foul in the closing seconds, he calmly knocked down two free throws, pushing the Magic’s lead out of reach. Tristan da Silva, another emerging contributor, added a free throw to cap off the scoring. Da Silva’s night was impressive in its own right—he tallied 23 points, including eight in his first nine minutes and nine more in the fourth quarter, showing poise beyond his years.

Orlando’s supporting cast didn’t miss a beat, even with rookie Anthony Black sidelined by a left lateral abdominal muscle strain. Jalen Suggs provided early offense, attacking the paint and converting three free throws in the first quarter. He finished with 12 points and four assists, including a critical three-pointer that put Orlando up by 13 late in the fourth quarter. Wendell Carter Jr. quietly notched his ninth double-double of the season, recording 11 points and 11 rebounds, anchoring the paint and providing second-chance opportunities.

Jett Howard and Jevon Carter stepped up off the bench, combining for 17 points and helping offset Cleveland’s superior bench production. Howard, in particular, gave the Magic a spark with a timely three-pointer and a highlight-reel dunk, while Carter shook off a slow shooting start to hit a key triple in the second half.

On the other side, the Cavaliers were left ruing missed opportunities. James Harden was electric, leading Cleveland with 30 points on 11-of-16 shooting, dishing out eight assists, and keeping the Cavs within striking distance throughout. Donovan Mitchell added 25 points, but struggled to find his rhythm late, shooting just 2-of-8 in the fourth quarter. Evan Mobley contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds, but foul trouble and a 2-of-7 night at the free-throw line limited his impact.

The Cavaliers’ bench outscored Orlando’s 36-22, with Keon Ellis pouring in 20 points—12 of them coming in a fourth-quarter surge that nearly brought Cleveland all the way back. Thomas Bryant chipped in 12 points, providing a steady presence in Allen’s absence. Yet, the Cavs’ Achilles’ heel was their free-throw shooting: they converted just 17-of-26 attempts (a paltry 34.3%), leaving crucial points on the table in a game where every possession mattered.

“More than anything, I just liked our process,” Bane reflected after the win. “Tristan was saying it coming off the court, like, this is fun. We’re playing a fun brand of basketball on both ends of the floor.” That sentiment was echoed by Mosley, who praised his team’s adaptability: “We’ve said it before. There’s going to be different ways to win games and we keep finding those ways. Games are going to look different but it’s taking it one game at a time.”

Despite the loss, Cleveland still leads the season series 2-1, with one more meeting scheduled for March 24 in Cleveland—a matchup that could have significant playoff implications. The Cavaliers will look to regroup quickly as they head to Dallas for a showdown with the Mavericks on March 13. Meanwhile, the Magic, now winners of five straight, will host the Washington Wizards on the second night of a back-to-back, eager to keep their streak alive and further solidify their postseason credentials.

With Orlando’s newfound confidence and Cleveland’s star power, the Eastern Conference playoff race just got a whole lot more interesting. The next chapter in this budding rivalry can’t come soon enough!
