Clemson Star Bryant Wesco Jr Faces Season-Ending Injury

Tigers wide receiver out for the year after scary punt return accident, but doctors and coaches expect a full recovery as teammates step up for the remainder of the season.

Clemson Tigers wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr. has been at the center of concern and support throughout the college football world after suffering a frightening injury during Saturday’s 35-24 loss to SMU at Memorial Stadium. The incident, which occurred in the third quarter, saw Wesco upended on a punt return, landing awkwardly on the back of his head and neck—a moment that sent shockwaves through the stadium and left teammates, coaches, and fans holding their breath.

On October 18, 2025, with just over ten minutes left in the third quarter, Wesco fielded a bouncing punt and advanced six yards before being tackled and flipped upside down. The impact was immediate and alarming. Although the sophomore receiver quickly got to his feet and jogged to the sideline, he did not return to the game. Head coach Dabo Swinney’s postgame comments reflected the uncertainty and gravity of the situation: “I have no information on him right now, we’ll just have to wait and see,” Swinney told reporters. “Just really praying for him. Just a serious deal where we were concerned enough to take him and get him checked.”

Wesco was promptly transported to a hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, about 45 minutes from Clemson, where he underwent extensive tests. The immediate fear was palpable, not just for the player’s season but for his overall health and future. Swinney, visibly shaken, refused to speculate on the extent of the injury at the time, emphasizing only the seriousness of the situation: “It is just a very serious deal where we are concerned enough to where we need to take him and get him checked.”

Wesco’s injury could not have come at a more challenging time for the Tigers’ offense. Already without fellow star receiver Antonio Williams Jr., who has been sidelined by a nagging hamstring injury, Clemson was forced to rely on a depleted receiving corps. Wesco, a 20-year-old former top 50 national recruit from Midlothian, Texas, entered the game as the team’s leading receiver and one of the ACC’s top offensive threats. Through seven games, he had amassed 31 catches for 537 yards and six touchdowns, averaging a staggering 17.3 yards per catch. His standout performances included a seven-catch, 118-yard, two-touchdown game against Troy and a five-catch, 106-yard outing with a touchdown against Boston College.

After the game, the Tigers turned to Tristan Smith and Cole Turner to fill the void left by Wesco. The offense, already missing quarterback Cade Klubnik and two starting offensive linemen—left tackle Tristan Leigh and left guard Collin Sadler—struggled to find rhythm against SMU, underscoring just how critical Wesco’s presence has been this season.

As the weekend progressed, updates on Wesco’s condition trickled in. On October 20, 2025, Coach Swinney provided a significant and much-anticipated update: Wesco had been released from the hospital and was back home in Clemson. “Prayers answered, just a blessing, kind of best-scenario,” Swinney said. “It was a very, very scary injury, and the doctors did an amazing job. ... A lot of unknowns for the first 24 hours or so, but he’s actually out of the hospital, back home.” Swinney made it clear that, while the injury was very serious, it was not like the neck fracture suffered by former Clemson receiver Mike Williams or the spinal issue that sidelined Justyn Ross. There were no fractures, and the medical team expressed confidence that Wesco would make a full recovery and return to play next season.

Wesco himself took to Instagram to thank the Clemson community and fans nationwide for their support. “Thank you to everyone sending your prayers. I really appreciate everyone’s help and support! It means the world to me,” he wrote on October 20, 2025. The outpouring of encouragement was a testament to his impact both on and off the field. Earlier, he had also posted in support of his teammates TJ Moore and Tristan Smith, who stepped up in his absence, writing, “No surprises,” after their second-half touchdowns.

Coach Swinney did not miss the opportunity to publicly thank Dr. Charles Kanos and his team at Prisma Health Greenville for their swift and expert care. Dr. Kanos, a specialist in spinal surgery at the Southeastern Neurosurgical and Spine Institute, was instrumental in overseeing Wesco’s evaluation and recovery process. Swinney added, “The doctors are very confident he’ll make a full recovery. Definitely something that’ll keep him out the rest of this season, but thankful that all indications are he’s gonna be OK. Just a real blessing for that.”

Wesco’s absence for the remainder of the 2025 season is a significant blow for the Tigers. As a preseason All-ACC selection and a player lauded for his intelligence, physical improvement, and technical skills, Wesco has been a linchpin for Clemson’s offense. Swinney’s praise earlier in the week now resonates even more: “As far as just the next level for him, it’s just continue his ascension. He’s so improved from a physical standpoint, from when he showed up here. There’s still more there, and that will happen as he just stays within the program and progresses. And then just from a technique, fundamental standpoint, he’s really gotten better there. He’s a very smart player. He really understands the game. He understands defense. Again, as he continues to physically get better, I think he’ll even be a better finisher on the ball.”

The Tigers will need to regroup ahead of their next matchup against Duke at Memorial Stadium on November 1. With key players like Wesco and Williams Jr. sidelined, the spotlight turns to the rest of the roster to step up and fill the void. The team’s resilience will be tested as they navigate the challenging ACC schedule, but the knowledge that their top receiver is on the road to recovery provides a measure of comfort and motivation.

For now, the Clemson community breathes a collective sigh of relief. Wesco’s injury, while season-ending, has not threatened his long-term health or football future—a “best-case scenario” in the wake of such a terrifying moment. The Tigers and their fans will be eagerly awaiting his return to the field next season, but for now, the focus remains on his continued recovery and the next chapter of Clemson football.
