Cambridge United Sign Jack Walton For Crucial Promotion Clash

Emergency loan move brings experienced Preston goalkeeper to Cambridge as club faces pivotal League Two showdown with Bromley following Eastwood’s suspension.

Cambridge United have moved swiftly to shore up their goalkeeping ranks by securing the emergency loan signing of Jack Walton from Preston North End, just in time for a pivotal League Two showdown against table-toppers Bromley. The deal, finalized on April 15, 2026, comes as the U’s chase an immediate return to League One, with their promotion campaign entering a critical phase and their regular first-choice keeper sidelined.

The urgency of the move was clear after a dramatic turn of events in Cambridge’s 4-0 triumph over Notts County at Abbey Stadium on April 11. In that match, Jake Eastwood, the club’s starting goalkeeper, was sent off for handling the ball outside the penalty area—a split-second decision that left his teammates celebrating victory but facing a selection headache. With Eastwood now suspended for at least one match, Cambridge faced the prospect of relying on 22-year-old Ben Hughes, who had only just made his Football League debut as Eastwood’s replacement against Notts County. Hughes performed admirably in that cameo, earning praise from all corners. Still, the stakes of the next fixture meant the coaching staff weren’t keen to gamble twice in a row.

“Ben came on and was outstanding,” manager Neil Harris told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. “To ask him to go again in such a pivotal game would have been a real big ask for him and a real huge gamble. We decided to go down the route of seeing what options were available to us, to bring in more experienced goalkeepers.”

Enter Jack Walton, the 27-year-old Preston North End shot-stopper with a wealth of experience in the English and Scottish leagues. Walton joined Preston last summer from Luton Town and has made five first-team appearances this season—three in the Championship and two in the Carabao Cup. Although his last outing for Preston was back in January, Walton’s track record is nothing to sniff at. He’s racked up more than 150 senior appearances, including over 60 for Barnsley and an impressive 85 during a two-season loan spell at Dundee United in Scotland.

“Jack comes with high pedigree and a lot of football played,” Harris continued. “We know the goalkeeper we are signing. We have some excellent references on him and the lad was ever so excited and desperate to come and play. He’s got the character and the mindset to do it, so it is a strong starting point.”

Walton’s arrival on a seven-day emergency loan means he’s immediately eligible to make his debut in what could be a season-defining clash at Hayes Lane, Bromley’s home ground. The timing couldn’t be more dramatic: Bromley sit atop the League Two table, and a win on Thursday night would see them promoted to League One for the first time in their history. Cambridge, meanwhile, occupy third place and are looking to cut the gap to the leaders to just three points with a victory of their own. The match is being billed as a promotion six-pointer, and with so much on the line, every decision—especially between the posts—carries added weight.

Harris was candid about the risk-reward calculus that led to Walton’s signing, especially given the pressure-cooker atmosphere of the League Two run-in. “In the heat of the moment, these things happen, we understand that—especially at this stage of the season when emotions are high, and you have to make marginal decisions on the spot. And we got it slightly wrong in that moment, the combination got it slightly wrong, and Jake rightly got sent off. We miss him for a game—Ben Hughes, I thought, who came on, was outstanding on his full league debut. To ask him to go again in such a pivotal game would have been a real big ask for him and a real huge gamble.”

Walton’s career trajectory has been a study in perseverance. He began at Barnsley, where he gained his first taste of senior football, before loan spells at Stalybridge Celtic and then Dundee United, where he became a regular starter north of the border. While his move to Luton Town in 2023 didn’t yield first-team opportunities, the switch to Preston North End last summer was seen as a fresh start. This season, he’s featured in both league and cup, but competition for the number one shirt at Preston has been fierce. After a tough outing in a 5-0 defeat to Middlesbrough, Walton found himself out of the matchday squad for several weeks, with Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom emphasizing that “performance” was the key factor in team selection. Still, Walton’s professionalism and hunger to play have never been in doubt.

“Your job is to get back in the team, that’s it, and that’s the mentality we want to create,” Heckingbottom said in early March. “If you accept not being in the team and you’re comfortable, you’re probably not for us here, because we can’t carry anyone. But certainly, you will still get the work, still get the opportunity, still get pushed every day and then it’s over to the players.”

For Walton, the emergency loan to Cambridge United represents a golden opportunity to get valuable minutes and play a decisive role in a promotion battle. The seven-day deal could see him feature not only against Bromley but also in upcoming home games against Grimsby on April 21 and Barrow on April 25. With just four games left in the regular season, every point is precious as Cambridge seek to bounce back to League One at the first time of asking after last season’s relegation.

As the U’s prepare for their trip to Hayes Lane, the mood in the camp is a mix of anticipation and determination. The stakes are sky-high: Bromley, in only their second-ever Football League campaign, are guaranteed their highest finish and stand on the brink of a historic promotion, while Cambridge are desperate to keep their own dreams alive. For Walton, it’s a chance to prove himself all over again. For Cambridge, it’s a test of depth, resilience, and the ability to seize the moment.

The action is set to unfold under the lights on Thursday night, with Walton poised to step into the spotlight. Whether he can deliver the safe hands Cambridge need remains to be seen, but one thing’s certain—the U’s are leaving nothing to chance as they fight for promotion glory.
