In a year already packed with historic events and fierce competition, the first quarter of 2026 saw cable news giants CNN and Fox News reporting record-breaking audience numbers, each claiming dominance in their own right. While both networks point to surges in viewership and engagement across television, digital, and streaming platforms, the data tells a story of a shifting, highly competitive media landscape shaped by global crises, U.S. political drama, and the evolving habits of news consumers.
According to CNN’s April 1, 2026 announcement, the network delivered its best quarter since 2022, with March 2026 boasting some of its highest-performing days of the year. CNN attributed this success to a relentless cycle of international and U.S. breaking news, including the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran and President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address. The network reported that during the first quarter of 2026, it achieved its best Total Day television performance among total viewers (P2+) since Q1 2022 and among adults 25-54 (P25-54) since Q3 2024—periods marked by the Russia-Ukraine war and the presidential election cycle, respectively.
For 15 consecutive quarters, CNN has ranked as a top 5 cable network in Total Day among P2+, and for 10 consecutive quarters, it has remained in the top 10 among P25-54. The network’s primetime lineup also saw a resurgence, with March 2026 marking its best Monday-Sunday and Monday-Friday Prime performance among P2+ since late 2024, and among P25-54 since November 2024. Compared to March 2025, CNN’s Total Day viewership soared by 48%, jumping from 437,000 to 646,000, while its Weekday Prime viewership climbed by 47% to 971,000.
Month-over-month numbers were similarly strong: March 2026 saw a 13% increase in Total Day viewership among P2+ and a 19% jump among P25-54 compared to February. Weekday Prime viewership also grew by 7% among P2+ and 6% among P25-54. CNN’s digital platforms experienced record-breaking engagement, with March delivering the highest daily audience since the Iran-Israel conflict in June 2025. Digital subscribers consumed the most total hours of programming since the launch of CNN’s All Access offering, and the first week of March posted the highest all-time weekly live video watch time on the subscription tier.
The network’s digital reach extended to podcasts and social media, with 30 million podcast downloads and streams year-to-date, and its most-watched TikTok video ever racking up 71.5 million views. The surge in engagement was largely driven by major news events: CNN’s weekend coverage of the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran ranked #2 in all cable among P2+ and #3 among P25-54, achieving the network’s best Weekend Total Day delivery among P2+ since the Russia-Ukraine war in March 2022 and among P25-54 since the assassination attempt on President Trump in July 2024.
During the first three days of the U.S.-Israel war with Iran, CNN was one of the top two most-watched cable networks among P2+ with 937,000 viewers, and ranked #3 among P25-54 with 184,000 viewers. The network’s digital platforms reached their highest performance of the year on the day the war began, attracting more new subscribers than any other day to date. CNN’s airing of President Trump’s State of the Union address on February 24, 2026, drew more than 2.3 million total viewers and 704,000 among P25-54—up 21% and 20% respectively from the previous year’s address. During the address, CNN ranked #2 in all of cable among both key demographics, and its streaming platform saw the second-highest peak concurrent viewers since launch.
CNN’s topical satire show, Have I Got News For You (HIGNFY), also contributed to the network’s strong quarter. The show’s latest season, which ran from January 31 to March 29, 2026, delivered series highs, with viewership among P25-54 up 141% and among P2+ up 60% compared to the previous season. These gains, according to Nielsen data cited by CNN, highlight the network’s ability to attract audiences across both hard news and entertainment segments.
But while CNN celebrated year-over-year growth and digital milestones, Fox News Channel maintained its dominant position atop the cable news hierarchy. In its own April 1, 2026 report, Fox News revealed it had topped all of cable for the 20th consecutive quarter and surpassed CBS among weekday primetime viewers. Fox News averaged 1.7 million total day viewers during Q1 2026, compared to 691,000 for MS NOW and 577,000 for CNN. In primetime, Fox News drew 2.6 million viewers, trouncing MS NOW’s 1.1 million and CNN’s 797,000.
Notably, Fox News has led cable news primetime viewership for an astonishing 97 consecutive quarters, even outdrawing ESPN despite marquee sports events like college football and the NFL playoffs. The network commanded nearly 60% of the cable news audience in both total day and primetime during Q1 2026. Among adults aged 25-54, Fox News averaged 172,000 total day viewers, compared to 101,000 for CNN and 72,000 for MS NOW. In primetime, Fox News attracted 265,000 in the demo, while CNN had 156,000 and MS NOW 114,000.
Fox News also aired 14 of the top 15 cable news shows by viewers during the quarter, posting double-digit increases across every hour quarter-over-quarter. "The Five," hosted by Dana Perino, Greg Gutfeld, Jesse Watters, Jessica Tarlov, and Harold Ford Jr., continued its historic run as the most-watched cable news show for 18 consecutive quarters, averaging 4 million total viewers and 354,000 in the key demo. "Special Report with Bret Baier" averaged more than 3 million viewers and outdrew CBS Evening News in 19 major markets, including New York, Chicago, Dallas, and Atlanta.
Late-night standout "Gutfeld!" averaged 3 million viewers, beating all broadcast and late-night television competition, including CBS’ "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," NBC’s "Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon," and ABC’s "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" Fox News’ weekday primetime block averaged nearly 3 million viewers, surpassing CBS’s 2.9 million. The network’s morning shows, including "FOX & Friends," averaged 1.4 million viewers and outperformed competitors in 23 markets.
Weekend programming was equally robust: "Saturday in America" drew 2.3 million viewers, while "Sunday Morning Futures" led Sunday cable news with 2 million total viewers. Fox News also ranked as the fastest-growing network in all television among primetime viewers and secured the top spot in cable among Hispanic and Asian audiences for both Q1 2026 and March 2026.
These parallel surges at CNN and Fox News underscore the intense battle for viewers’ attention in a year defined by political upheaval and global conflict. While Fox News maintains its leadership in total audience and key demographics, CNN’s growth—especially in digital engagement and during breaking news events—signals a dynamic, evolving landscape where no network can rest on its laurels. With audiences tuning in across more platforms than ever, the race for cable news supremacy remains as fierce and unpredictable as the news itself.
