Bryan Murray Moves To Full-Time Care Amid Alzheimer’s Battle

The beloved Brookside and Fair City actor’s wife shares their journey and urges support for Alzheimer’s Tea Day as his condition progresses.

Bryan Murray, the Dublin-born actor whose unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on British and Irish television, has entered full-time care as his battle with Alzheimer’s disease intensifies. The news, shared by his wife, Una Crawford O'Brien, during the launch of Alzheimer’s Tea Day 2026, has resonated deeply with fans and the entertainment community alike, marking a poignant chapter in the life of a man celebrated for his talent, warmth, and resilience.

Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2019, Murray, now 76, continued to work for several years, most notably as Bob Charles on the long-running Irish soap Fair City. His dedication to his craft and his ability to bring depth to every role earned him the admiration of colleagues and viewers. According to The Irish Times, Murray’s move to full-time care came after a year in which his needs grew significantly, a reality that Una described with heartbreaking clarity. “Over the past year, Bryan’s needs became far greater, and he has now moved into full-time care. Up until now, I didn’t have time to think. My day was completely focused on Bryan and his needs. Now I have time to miss him,” she shared at the Tea Day launch.

The couple’s journey through Alzheimer’s has been marked by both sorrow and solidarity. Una, herself an actress who met Bryan while working on Fair City—where their characters’ on-screen romance blossomed into real-life partnership—has spoken candidly about the emotional toll of caregiving. “I don’t mind looking after him—sometimes it can be frustrating, sometimes it can be annoying, sometimes it’s funny. I think it is the sadness when you realize that your life has changed because of being a carer. When we got together, he made me laugh so much, I fell off a chair! He brought laughter back into my life,” she told The Ray D’Arcy Show.

As Murray’s illness progressed, Una began to notice profound changes. In an interview with The Irish Times, she confessed, “I have lost my friend and companion. Bryan isn’t happy and he used to be such a happy person. I think it’s because he just doesn’t know about anything really.” Her words capture the complex grief that accompanies Alzheimer’s—not only the loss of memory, but the slow fading of the person one loves.

Despite these challenges, Una has found strength in the support of family, friends, and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland. She credits this network with helping her and Bryan cope, stating, “There is no way that Bryan would have been able to cope without the help of family and friends and the extraordinary support the family had received from The Alzheimer Society of Ireland,” as reported by Echo.

Una is now using her platform to encourage participation in Alzheimer’s Tea Day, which takes place on Thursday, May 7, 2026. Her message is simple but powerful: “You can host a huge Tea Party in your garden or simply put the kettle on and share a cuppa with friends. What matters most is that you are there. Please sign up today. It really is so important.” The event aims to foster community, raise awareness, and generate much-needed support for those affected by Alzheimer’s and their families.

Bryan Murray’s career is a testament to his versatility and charisma. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Trevor Jordache in the Channel 4 soap Brookside—a role that, while brief, became one of the most iconic in British television history. Trevor Jordache was a violent and abusive husband and father, and his shocking murder at the hands of Mandy Jordache remains one of the most memorable moments in soap opera lore. The storyline, which saw Mandy and her daughter Beth bury Trevor’s body under the patio, sent shockwaves through audiences and is still discussed as a turning point in the genre.

Murray’s impact extended far beyond Brookside. He delighted viewers as Shifty Boswell in the BBC comedy Bread, a role that earned him the BBC TV Personality of the Year Award. Reflecting on his time with the show, Murray once remarked, “When you meet Jean [Boht], the warmth she gives you is the equivalent of your mother. You’re being welcomed home. Jean was amazing.” These words, as reported by Liverpool Echo, highlight the camaraderie and affection that characterized much of Murray’s professional life.

In addition to these standout performances, Murray appeared in a host of other popular British television series, including Casualty, Holby City, The Bill, Silent Witness, and The Tudors. His ability to inhabit a wide range of characters made him a familiar and beloved figure on both sides of the Irish Sea.

His tenure on Fair City was particularly significant. For two decades, he brought the character of Bob Charles to life, becoming an integral part of the show’s fabric. Brigie de Courcy, Executive Producer of Fair City, expressed the collective sadness felt by the cast and crew: “We are all very sad about this. Bryan has been an absolutely wonderful part of the team for the last 20 years, an integral part of the story and an absolute consummate professional. He is the very sort of person, when you have a young actor coming in, you say to them, ‘go down and watch Bryan and watch what he does, how he occupies the space and how he occupies the screen’.”

Murray’s decision to go public with his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2022 was motivated by a desire to help others. By sharing his story, he aimed to raise awareness of the disease and offer support to those facing similar challenges. His openness has helped destigmatize Alzheimer’s and brought much-needed visibility to the experiences of patients and caregivers alike.

For Una, the journey has been a mixture of sorrow and gratitude. She continues to cherish the joy and laughter Bryan brought into her life, even as she navigates the daily realities of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. Her advocacy and candor have brought comfort to many, reminding others that they are not alone.

Bryan Murray’s legacy is one of talent, kindness, and courage. As he enters this new phase of care, the outpouring of support from fans and colleagues stands as a testament to the indelible mark he has left on the world of entertainment and beyond.
