Bristol Schools Locked Down After Speedwell Shooting

A shooting in Bristol’s Speedwell area leaves one man seriously injured, triggers a city-wide manhunt, and prompts local schools to enter precautionary lockdown as police appeal for witnesses.

On a tense Wednesday afternoon, the Speedwell area of Bristol was thrust into chaos after a shooting left a man in his twenties with potentially life-changing injuries and sparked a massive police response, including the precautionary lockdown of three local schools. The incident, which unfolded on April 1, 2026, has left the community shaken and searching for answers as authorities continue a city-wide manhunt for the suspect.

According to Avon and Somerset Police, officers were called to Speedwell Road at 1:47 pm following reports that a gun had been fired at a car. Emergency services, including armed police, raced to the scene, supported by a police helicopter and an air ambulance. The victim, a man in his twenties, was quickly transported to Southmead Hospital with what police have described as a "serious and potentially life-changing injury." Fortunately, no other injuries have been reported.

Witnesses described a dramatic response, with a police helicopter circling overhead for up to ninety minutes, sweeping across East Bristol from Speedwell to Kingswood, St George, and St Anne’s. An air ambulance was tracked lifting off from Barton Fields before landing at Southmead Hospital just before 2:30 pm. The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust confirmed, "We were called at 13:46hrs on Wednesday 01 April to an incident in Bristol. We sent one double-crewed land ambulance, an air ambulance, an operations officer, and a critical care car to the scene. We conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Southmead Hospital."

The scale of the emergency response was matched only by the urgency of the ensuing manhunt. Police have issued a detailed description of the suspect, who fled the scene in the direction of Soundwell on a black and grey electric bike. The individual is described as white, in his late teens or early twenties, of slim build, approximately 6ft tall, wearing a grey hoodie, black trousers, and a balaclava. The search continues, with significant resources deployed, including the National Police Air Service helicopter and specially trained firearms officers.

Chief Inspector James Clements addressed the public’s anxiety, stating, "I know this incident will be incredibly concerning, however we are deploying significant resources, including a National Police Air Service helicopter and our specially-trained firearms officers, as we work to locate the person responsible. The victim has been taken to hospital where he is being treated for an injury that’s potentially life-changing, but not believed to be life-threatening. His family have been informed and will be kept updated as our investigation progresses. There is likely to be a significant police presence in the area over the coming days while our investigation continues. Neighbourhood officers will also be carrying out extra patrols and anyone with any concerns can speak with them about these."

As news of the shooting spread, authorities acted quickly to safeguard local children, placing Bristol Brunel Academy, Two Mile Hill Primary, and Chester Park Infant and Junior schools into precautionary lockdown. Parents were urged not to come to school gates, and staff reassured families that all pupils were safe inside. Bristol Brunel Academy communicated to parents, "We are still in a precautionary lockdown following police advice. Please do not worry, this is a precaution only and we are waiting to hear further instructions. All staff and students are safe. We have been advised by police to remain in lockdown due to the incident in the local community. Staff and students remain in the Academy and we will await further updates from police."

Two Mile Hill Primary echoed the sentiment, stating, "Due to a serious incident in the local area, Two Mile Hill Primary has been placed into lockdown as a precaution. During this time, no one will be able to enter or leave the school site. We understand that this is very close to the end of the school day and may cause inconvenience; however, the safety and security of our pupils and wider community is our highest priority. We will provide further updates as soon as we are able." Chester Park Infant and Junior schools were also confirmed to be in lockdown, following police guidance.

On the ground, the police cordoned off several key roads, including parts of New Queen Street between Speedwell Road and Two Mile Hill, as well as Charlton Road from the junction of Speedwell Road to New Queen Street. The junction of Ingleside Road and Charlton Road was also sealed off. Officers were photographed at the scene, maintaining the cordons and collecting evidence as the investigation pressed on.

Local officials and community leaders responded swiftly. Damien Egan, Labour Member of Parliament for Bristol North East, expressed his concern: "I am concerned to learn that a serious incident has taken place this afternoon where a man has been taken to hospital with a potentially life-changing injury after a gun was fired in the Speedwell area of Bristol. This has led to schools in our constituency going into precautionary lockdown while the police continue with their investigations. Affected schools are directly in touch with parents and the latest information about the incident can be found in a statement that Avon and Somerset Police have published on their website."

Police have made a public appeal for information, urging anyone who witnessed the incident, has footage, or possesses any information that could assist the investigation to come forward. The force provided the reference number 5226089476 for tips and encouraged the use of the independent charity Crimestoppers for those wishing to remain anonymous.

The events in Speedwell have once again brought attention to concerns about violent crime and community safety in British cities. While gun violence remains relatively rare compared to some international contexts, its impact is deeply felt whenever it erupts, particularly in residential neighborhoods and near schools. The rapid and visible police response, including the deployment of air and ground resources, reflects both the seriousness with which authorities treat such incidents and the priority placed on public safety.

For many Bristol residents, the incident is a stark reminder of the unpredictability of violence and the importance of robust emergency protocols. The swift lockdowns, clear communication from schools, and coordinated emergency services response were crucial in preventing further harm and reassuring families during a period of uncertainty.

As the investigation continues and the hunt for the suspect intensifies, the community remains on edge but hopeful for a swift resolution. Police presence will remain heightened in the area, with extra patrols and neighborhood officers available to address any concerns from residents. Authorities are urging vigilance and cooperation, emphasizing that public assistance could be vital in bringing the perpetrator to justice.

In the aftermath, the focus will inevitably shift to questions about security, policing, and support for those affected. For now, Bristol’s Speedwell district is united in concern for the victim’s recovery and in determination to restore calm to its streets.
