Bodycam Footage Shows Train Manager Arrested After Assault

Newly released video reveals the moment police detained Nicholas McMurray at Swansea Station following his conviction for sexually assaulting a teenager on a Great Western Railway train.

The release of dramatic bodycam footage in October 2025 has cast new light on the arrest and conviction of Nicholas McMurray, a former Great Western Railway (GWR) train manager who sexually assaulted a teenage passenger last year. The footage, made public by British Transport Police (BTP), shows the moment officers apprehended McMurray on the platform at Swansea Station, calmly escorting him out of the station and into a waiting police car—an arrest that followed a harrowing ordeal for his 18-year-old victim.

The incident unfolded in June 2024 during a routine train journey between Cardiff and Swansea, according to reporting by The Telegraph and The Sun. McMurray, then 38 years old, was working as a train manager for GWR. He approached his victim, who was traveling alone in an isolated section of the train, and requested to see her ticket. What began as a standard ticket check quickly took a sinister turn. As McMurray checked her ticket, he adjusted the young woman’s dress—an act that, prosecutors argued in Swansea Crown Court, was a calculated move to "gauge whether a sexual assault would be feasible."

The victim, sensing something was wrong, moved toward the carriage doors as the train neared its destination. But McMurray followed, touching her without consent and then kissing her "passionately and aggressively," as described in court by Ian Wright, the prosecuting attorney. He went on to sexually assault her—an act that would later see him convicted of both sexual assault and assault by penetration.

Upon arrival at Swansea Station, the young woman wasted no time. She immediately sought out police officers who were patrolling the station and reported the attack. British Transport Police responded swiftly, locating McMurray as he stood by the train on the platform. The bodycam footage, now circulating widely, captures the officers approaching the suspect, placing his hands in sealed bags for evidence preservation, and leading him away from the scene. According to BTP, "He (McMurray) used his position to prey on a lone passenger, under the guise of helping her. The woman bravely reported it to police officers patrolling the station and he was immediately arrested on the platform in front of his train."

During the subsequent investigation, McMurray attempted to deflect blame, telling police that the young woman had tried to kiss him first and that she was fully consenting. However, this claim was thoroughly discredited during the trial. The court heard compelling testimony from the victim and reviewed the evidence, ultimately finding McMurray guilty of both sexual assault and assault by penetration in February 2025.

Swansea Crown Court sentenced McMurray to seven years in prison. Judge Huw Rees, presiding over the case, was unsparing in his condemnation, telling McMurray, "You took advantage of an alone and vulnerable young woman to satisfy your sexual hunger." The judge emphasized that McMurray had grossly abused his position of authority and trust as a train manager—a role that should have ensured passengers’ safety, not threatened it.

In addition to his prison sentence, McMurray was placed on the sex offenders' register for life, a measure designed to protect the public from further harm. Det Con Farrell, one of the investigating officers, praised the victim’s courage, stating, "McMurray completely abused his position and took advantage of this young woman. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the victim for her courage and bravery throughout the police investigation. McMurray will now have to spend a considerable amount of time to reflect on the actions he took that day."

For Great Western Railway, the incident prompted immediate action. As soon as the company became aware of the allegations, McMurray was removed from duty. A spokesperson for GWR confirmed to The Telegraph, "As soon as we became aware of the incident, we took immediate action to remove the individual from duty. He no longer works for the business. This sentencing was only possible because of the victim’s immense courage in coming forward. As we welcome the court’s decision, our thoughts remain firmly with her and her family."

The release of the bodycam footage has reignited public discussion about the safety of passengers—particularly women—on public transport. The footage shows the professionalism of the officers as they carry out the arrest, but it also serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability passengers can face, even in seemingly routine situations. The British Transport Police noted in their statement that the victim did "the right thing in reporting it to the officers and this man is now behind bars."

The case has also highlighted the importance of prompt reporting and the role of law enforcement in ensuring swift justice. The victim’s decision to immediately approach officers at Swansea Station was pivotal in ensuring McMurray’s arrest and subsequent prosecution. Her bravery, echoed in statements by both law enforcement and GWR, has been widely recognized as instrumental in bringing the perpetrator to justice.

While the conviction and sentencing of McMurray bring a measure of closure, the incident has left a lasting impact on all involved. The victim’s ordeal has prompted calls for continued vigilance and improved safety measures on public transport networks. For many, the case underscores the need for robust safeguarding procedures and the importance of holding those in positions of authority to the highest standards of conduct.

As the footage continues to circulate, it serves as both a cautionary tale and a testament to the power of swift action and courageous reporting. The hope, expressed by many observers, is that the case will encourage other victims of similar crimes to come forward and seek justice, confident that their voices will be heard and their actions supported.

For the wider public, the story is a sobering reminder that vigilance, accountability, and the courage to speak out remain essential in the ongoing effort to ensure safety and justice for all passengers.
