Bali Tops Global Travel Rankings As Europe Explores Locally

New data shows Europeans favor domestic trips while iconic events and global awards highlight the evolving landscape of travel in 2026.

Travel is booming in 2026, and the latest numbers and accolades paint a vivid picture of how people across Europe and around the world are embracing adventure, culture, and the great outdoors. From the snow-dusted trails of Ohio’s Hocking Hills to the sun-drenched beaches of Bali, travelers are seeking out both the familiar and the extraordinary, spurred on by new rankings and a renewed passion for exploration.

According to a comprehensive report released by Eurostat on January 13, 2026, nearly 249 million Europeans aged 15 and older—about 65% of the population—took at least one overnight trip for personal reasons in 2024. That’s a staggering figure, underscoring just how vital travel remains to daily life, even in an era marked by shifting economic tides and global uncertainties. Most of these journeys, it turns out, were close to home: 71.3% of all trips were domestic, reflecting a strong preference for exploring one’s own country. When Europeans did venture abroad, they overwhelmingly stayed within the European Union, with 92.2% of international trips taking place inside EU borders. On average, travelers shelled out €303 for domestic trips and a much heftier €1,053 for journeys abroad—numbers that speak to both the accessibility and the aspirational nature of travel in the region.

While Europe’s love affair with travel continues, the spirit of adventure is hardly confined to the continent. In the United States, communities are gearing up for iconic local events that draw visitors from near and far. Southeastern Ohio’s Hocking Hills region, for example, is preparing for the 60th Annual Winter Hike on January 17, 2026. This six-mile trek, which starts at Old Man’s Cave and winds through some of the Midwest’s most breathtaking winter landscapes, is more than just a walk in the woods. It’s a living tradition, first led in 1967 by the legendary Grandma Emma Gatewood, and has since grown into a celebration of both natural beauty and community spirit.

This year’s hike carries special significance, marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As thousands of participants lace up their boots for the event—scheduled for continuous starts between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.—they’ll be treated to complimentary hot bean soup and cornbread at Cedar Falls, courtesy of the local Kiwanis Club. Donations are encouraged, supporting ongoing community work. The journey ends at Ash Cave, where the Lions Club will greet weary hikers with hot chocolate and doughnuts, a sweet finish to an invigorating day.

“Winter is truly magical in the Hocking Hills, as visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a completely different beauty and while immersing themselves in a spectacular winter wonderland,” said James Martin, Communications Director for Explore Hocking Hills, in the event announcement. He added, “They love the chance to be active in the outdoors, which combined with the deep gorges and rock formations warms hikers for a fantastic experience.”

Safety is a top priority, with organizers recommending layered clothing and sturdy footwear with good traction—or even crampons—to navigate the often slippery, snow- and ice-covered trails. Hikers are also encouraged to document their experiences and share them on social media with the hashtag #MyHockingHills, ensuring that the region’s beauty reaches well beyond Ohio’s borders.

But the festivities don’t stop with the hike. The same day, Hocking Hills will host the ninth annual Frozen Festival, transforming the area into a winter playground. Visitors can marvel at more than two dozen massive ice sculptures, watch live carving demonstrations, and try their hand at ice corn hole or Skee-Ball. There’s also a giant ice photo frame and an ice throne for the perfect selfie, plus local arts and crafts, food trucks, and dining options. With its blend of natural wonder and creative celebration, Hocking Hills—just 40 miles southeast of Columbus—offers a snapshot of how local traditions can inspire travel and foster community pride.

On the global stage, the appetite for discovery is just as robust. Tripadvisor, the world’s largest travel guidance platform, announced its 2026 Travelers’ Choice Awards: Best of the Best Destinations on January 13, 2026, spotlighting the places that resonate most with travelers worldwide. The awards, based on millions of reviews from October 1, 2024, through September 30, 2025, offer a fascinating glimpse into current travel trends and aspirations.

Bali, Indonesia, claims the title of No. 1 Top Destination in the World for 2026, celebrated for its lush landscapes, white sand beaches, and warm hospitality. According to Laurel Greatrix, Chief Communications Officer for Tripadvisor Group, “From iconic cities like Bangkok and London to cultural hubs, serene beach escapes, and romantic getaways across Madeira, Singapore, Bali, and beyond, the Best of the Best Destinations showcase the places that make every journey unforgettable — and inspire travelers to explore the world with confidence.”

Other global favorites include London, Dubai, Paris, Rome, and Bangkok, each offering a unique blend of history, culture, and adventure. In the U.S., New York City once again leads the pack, followed by perennial favorites like Las Vegas, Nashville, New Orleans, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.—not to mention coastal escapes such as O’ahu and Key West. The awards also highlight emerging hotspots: Madeira, Portugal, is the No. 1 Trending Destination in the World, lauded for its dramatic natural beauty and relaxed pace, while Tbilisi, Georgia, continues to rise as a must-visit city blending old-world charm with modern energy.

Travelers are also branching out in how they experience the world. Dublin, Ireland, is recognized as the top Solo Travel Destination for the second year running, praised for its walkability, vibrant food scene, and friendly atmosphere. Meanwhile, London takes the crown as the No. 1 Food Destination, reflecting a culinary renaissance that spans Michelin-starred restaurants and bustling street markets. Singapore, for its part, is named the top Culture Destination, celebrated for its blend of tradition and innovation.

These accolades, drawn from the voices of millions of travelers, reveal a world in motion—one where people are eager to seek out both the comfort of familiar places and the thrill of the new. Whether it’s a weekend hike in Ohio, a cross-country railway journey, or a bucket-list trip to Bali, the message is clear: travel remains a source of joy, connection, and inspiration.

As 2026 unfolds, the choices for travelers are more diverse and dynamic than ever, reflecting both the enduring appeal of classic destinations and the excitement of discovering somewhere new. The world, it seems, is open for adventure—one journey at a time.
