Armed Police Respond After Birmingham School Stabbing

A man was seriously injured and a woman hurt in a midday stabbing near a Birmingham primary school, prompting a major armed police response and community lockdown.

Bridge Road in the Alum Rock area of Birmingham was the scene of a dramatic and deeply unsettling incident on March 3, 2026, when a man was stabbed and a woman injured, prompting a massive response by armed police, emergency services, and forensic teams. The events unfolded just after noon, sending shockwaves through a community already on edge, and raising urgent questions about public safety near schools and residential areas.

According to reports from Sky News and BirminghamLive, the incident began shortly after 12:06 pm when West Midlands Police received multiple 999 calls about a stabbing on Bridge Road. The location, situated just outside Rosary Catholic Primary School and adjacent to The Village Community Nursery, immediately heightened concerns for the safety of children and residents in the area. Both educational facilities were swiftly placed in lockdown as a precaution, while officers rushed to secure the scene.

Eyewitness accounts, shared with The Express and BirminghamLive, painted a harrowing picture. One local resident, who asked not to be named, said, “It’s shocking that it happened just outside the school. I only hope no kids saw it as it was just before lunchtime.” Another bystander recounted an act of desperate bravery, describing how a good Samaritan attempted to intervene by driving his van at the attacker in a bid to stop the violence. “I parked my van and jumped out to help him. I don’t what colour or religion you are, you help people. The next thing the guy with the knife tried to attack me. He was speaking a different language. I used my van to try to get him, but he kept coming. In the end I jumped the fence to save myself and he ran inside. There was a woman screaming from one of the flats, so the attack must have started there.”

As the chaos unfolded, emergency services—including three ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma team, and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance—arrived on the scene. A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service told BirminghamLive: “Crews arrived to find a man with serious injuries and administered advanced life support on scene. A second patient, a woman, was treated for less serious injuries.” The man’s injuries were described as serious, while the woman’s were not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

Police quickly established a cordon around Bridge Road, with dozens of armed officers and police vehicles flooding the area. Forensic teams in blue tents worked meticulously to gather evidence, while parents and residents gathered anxiously around the cordon. According to BirminghamLive, police maintained a strong presence at the junction of Bridge Road and Parkfield Road, adjacent to Our Lady of the Rosary and St Therese Roman Catholic Church, to keep the public at a safe distance and reassure the shaken community.

The suspect, a 32-year-old man, was arrested at the scene and is currently in police custody. West Midlands Police confirmed that firearms officers were deployed as part of their response, and that the incident was believed to be contained. Detective Superintendent James Munro, leading the investigation, stated: “We believe this to be a contained incident with a man in custody. We are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to a number of people in the area. But would appeal to anyone who has any information to get in touch. We understand how deeply distressing and concerning this incident is and we will have extra officers in the area to offer reassurance to the community.”

In the aftermath, local leaders urged calm and called for cooperation with the authorities. Councillor John Cotton, Leader of Birmingham City Council, posted on X: “Suspect in custody after a horrible incident in Alum Rock this afternoon and my thoughts are with everyone affected. Please give the emergency services space to do their jobs and avoid speculation.”

As details emerged, it became clear that the violence had unfolded in full view of several witnesses. One particularly distressing moment saw a woman screaming with bloodied hands from an upstairs window, shouting that the man was outside her door. This detail, reported by The Express and BirminghamLive, suggested the attack may have started inside the block of flats before spilling out onto the street.

Children from Rosary Catholic Primary School were not believed to have been in the playground at the time, sparing the community from even greater trauma. Nevertheless, the proximity of the attack to both the school and the nursery underscored the vulnerability of the area and the need for swift, coordinated action by authorities.

Throughout the afternoon, police continued to appeal for information, urging anyone with mobile phone or dashcam footage to come forward. The force encouraged witnesses to call 101, quoting log number 2105 of March 3, or to provide anonymous tips via Crimestoppers. Detective Superintendent Munro emphasized the importance of community cooperation, noting that officers were reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to numerous people in the area.

Forensic officers spent hours combing the scene, setting up tents and collecting potential evidence, as reported by BirminghamLive. The cordon remained in place well into the afternoon, with officers guarding entrances and ensuring that no one entered the area without permission. The police presence was described as overwhelming, with some bystanders likening the situation to a “siege.”

As the city grappled with the aftermath, the focus turned to recovery and reassurance. Extra officers were deployed to the area, not only to investigate the incident but also to provide a visible sense of security for residents, parents, and children returning to the area in the days to come. The incident, while contained, left a mark on the community, highlighting both the dangers faced by urban neighborhoods and the resilience of those who live and work there.

The investigation remains ongoing, with West Midlands Police continuing to seek information from the public. The hope among many in Alum Rock is that answers will come swiftly, justice will be served, and the sense of safety that was so suddenly shattered will be restored.
