Agentic AI Set To Transform Work And Search In 2026

Major firms and analysts predict a shift from chatbots to autonomous agents as AI becomes embedded in daily life, with Romania’s market reflecting these rapid changes.

As 2026 approaches, the landscape of artificial intelligence is on the brink of a dramatic transformation—one that promises to reshape not only how people interact with technology but also how businesses, governments, and individuals manage their daily lives. Analysts at Gartner, Forrester, and IDC have dubbed 2026 the year of "Agentic AI," a term capturing the shift from passive chatbots to autonomous agents capable of reasoning, planning multi-step tasks, and executing complex workflows without constant human oversight.

In practical terms, this means AI systems are set to move far beyond simply answering questions. According to Gartner’s 2026 Strategic Trends, these new "Multiagent Systems" will be a top priority for organizations seeking to stay competitive. Cisco and Microsoft, two titans in the technology sector, predict that 2026 will mark the rise of "Connected Intelligence," where humans will supervise AI agents rather than directly running software themselves. This isn’t just a subtle change—it’s a wholesale reimagining of how digital work gets done.

Google’s 2026 AI Business Report adds another intriguing detail: these agents could save employees roughly 40 minutes per interaction by handling routine tasks autonomously. In a world where time is money, that’s a staggering potential boost to productivity. Gartner, meanwhile, forecasts a 25 percent drop in traditional search volume by 2026, a shift that’s already giving rise to a new marketing discipline: Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO). In this emerging landscape, brands are jostling for the coveted position of being cited as authoritative sources inside AI-generated answers.

Global AI spending is expected to soar past $300 billion in 2026, reflecting both the excitement and the urgency with which businesses are racing to adapt. Yet, it’s not all smooth sailing. Forrester has sounded a note of caution, warning of "CX fatigue"—a kind of collective exhaustion as companies grapple with the relentless pace of AI innovation. They predict a "pragmatic reset" in which businesses stop chasing every shiny new tool and instead focus on solutions that genuinely move the needle.

One of the most significant shifts on the horizon is the evolution of generative AI beyond mere text. Analysts expect 2026 to see explosive growth in AI-generated video, audio, and 3D content, with profound implications for marketing, entertainment, and digital media. Companies are also increasingly turning to synthetic data—data generated by AI itself—to train their models more safely and efficiently, particularly in highly regulated industries where privacy is paramount.

Regulation is another front where big changes are coming. The enforcement of the European Union’s AI Act, expected by mid-2026, is set to influence not just the continent but global standards for AI governance. Companies worldwide are scrambling to prepare for stricter requirements around labeling AI-generated content, documenting model behavior, and ensuring compliance with privacy safeguards. The era of "trust-focused AI" is dawning, where transparency and safety are not just buzzwords but business imperatives.

But what does all this mean on the ground? In Romania, for instance, the AI revolution is already well underway. According to a recent analysis by SEO agency Mixtazure, ChatGPT remained the most widely used AI chat tool in Romania throughout 2025, boasting a commanding market share of over 85% and recording around 4 million monthly searches in November. This puts it well ahead of competitors, but the landscape is shifting fast.

Google Gemini, rebranded from Bard and bolstered by a series of updates over the past year, has been gaining serious traction. By the end of 2025, Gemini had entered the top three AI tools in Romania by search volume, with particularly sharp increases in August and September. The Mixtazure study suggests that this upward trend is likely to continue into 2026, especially given Gemini’s backing by Google’s formidable infrastructure and distribution channels.

Microsoft Copilot, meanwhile, has held steady—its adoption largely tied to corporate users who rely on Microsoft 365 services. The competition for second place in the Romanian AI market is heating up, with Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity all vying for the spotlight. While Claude and Perplexity continue to grow steadily, Gemini’s momentum in 2025 has been the most impressive, hinting at a possible shakeup in the rankings in the near future.

Interestingly, the Mixtazure report also noted a decline in searches for the term "Google" in the third quarter of 2025 compared to early 2023. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Google’s dominance as a search engine is waning, but rather that user behaviors are changing as more people turn to AI chat tools for their informational needs. In fact, nearly 60% of Romanian respondents said they now use AI chats more often than traditional search engines. Most of these users—especially those from Generation Z and Millennials aged 20 to 39—have been integrating AI chat tools into both personal and professional activities for one to two years.

Despite the growing enthusiasm, the primary uses for AI tools in Romania remain informational searches, followed by work-related and educational purposes. Commercial applications, such as shopping, are still limited, suggesting there’s room for further growth and innovation as AI capabilities mature.

Looking beyond Romania, the global trends are clear. AI is being embedded everywhere: in smartphones, browsers, cars, wearables, and household devices. Edge AI—models that run locally on devices—will become the norm, enabling real-time responses, enhanced privacy, and offline use. Contextual, memory-driven AI is also on the rise, with models retaining and utilizing long-term context to deliver more personalized and coherent responses over time.

The infrastructure underpinning these advances is evolving rapidly. Hybrid AI and quantum computing workflows are moving from the lab to real-world applications, especially in fields like optimization and scientific simulation. Efficiency, sustainability, and custom silicon are becoming the watchwords for next-generation AI infrastructure, making powerful tools accessible without unsustainable energy demands.

Cybersecurity is another area where AI will play a pivotal role. Automated threat hunting and incident response are expected to become standard practice, with AI serving as both a sword and a shield—helping defenders stay ahead of attackers who are themselves leveraging AI for more sophisticated, adaptive assaults.

Finally, the workforce is set for significant change. Rather than simply replacing jobs, AI will augment human work by creating new roles and emphasizing skills like prompt engineering, workflow design, and AI oversight. As Forrester notes, this shift could help alleviate some of the "CX fatigue" by allowing humans to focus on higher-value tasks while AI handles the drudgery.

With 2026 just around the corner, the promise—and the challenge—of Agentic AI is becoming a reality. The world is on the cusp of an era where intelligent agents, embedded everywhere, will fundamentally change how people live and work. The stakes are high, and the opportunities are vast for those ready to embrace the future.
